Dummy Spitting Episode Over Tolls

I once worked for a company when I lived in Eastbourne and once a week i went via the Dartford crossing they would allways put the toll money in my weekly wage packet with no questions asked, quite often I would use a van so no Tacho thats when i used to go another way and still claim back the toll money they allways paid it.
They also asked for my mobile number they never got it.
all the best
Taffy

As a employed driver I don’t expect to have to provide my own mobile, tacho charts, or tolls, these are part of the cost of running a truck & if they cannot afford to do so then I am going to be very carefully that the vehicle is being maintained correctly before I leave the yard.
I would not put the diesel in out of my own money & I’m sure not going to pay a toll, the M25 goes in both directions, one way is shorter than the other & sometimes the short route involves a toll, they decide which I take.

As I’ve already said, as an Agency driver with a certain Company, I’ve never had problems with Tolls being reimbursed or indeed, my phone calls being paid at PAYG rate. Any calls before 7.0pm, (25p per minute), they certainly were expected to pay. Anything after that time, then I wouldn’t claim on every occasion, but as the need to phone them often means repeated calls to sort out a problem, then I would have no hesitation in claiming £1 or £2. The people in the office had a fair idea of if and when I used my phone and the claims were always met. I just made sure that I wasn’t out of pocket.

I remember one day I met another Agency driver working for the same firm at a collection point in Kent. He was new to working for them and, having tipped in Harlow, went anti-clockwise on the M25 to avoid the QE2 Bridge toll, because he wasn’t sure of their policy on repaying toll charges. :unamused:

He probably cost the Company nigh on £50 quid in fuel for the sake of £2.90

Whilst I can appreciate his concerns at not being expected to subsidise the Operation, Was it really worth the hassle and the environmental damage for what amounts to, the price of a pint or half a pack of ■■■■.

I understand what you are saying but i’d be concerned it’s the ‘thin end of the wedge’.

There is the old saying also, “You look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves!”.

Turning it around, I have to submit the fuel returns for all our fleet on a monthly basis. I know fuel is the main running cost etc etc but the amount of fuss/energies/etc that are created when there is a change (to the second decimal point) says to me that taking care of the ‘pennies’ is the norm now.

Liberace:
Today I was told to pay for the Dartford Tunnel out of my own pocket and claim it back later. Another driver said “tell 'em you’ve got no money on you, because if you do pay it, you’ll not get it back.” That’s what I did.

Tomorrow, I’ve got a Dartford ASDA run (I see they’re being awkward), just the wrong side of the Dartford Crossing. I’m seriousley considering turning up and not taking the job because of having to pay for the toll out of my own pocket. My first question will be: When do you get it (the money) back. If I don’t get a satisfactory answer, then the load will be staying where it is. Either that, or I’ll be spitting my dummy at everyone in sight at the Dartford crossing around 09-45 tomorrow morning. If you see an unmarked Merc Actros going ape, then it’s me .

:open_mouth:

Don’t know about the username ‘Liberace’ - I would have thought that ‘Drama Queen’ would be far more fitting.

I think a bit of a reality check is required. If you’re having this many (alleged) problems then perhaps the haulage industry isn’t for you?

In all the companies and agencies I’ve worked for over the years I’ve never had one that hasn’t reimbursed tolls or parking fees.

I know for a fact that ASDA pay them, with or without a receipt, and the agency would pay them anyway. If the agency you’re with doesn’t, then I suggest you ditch them and find one that does (ie. the other 99% of them) and quit spitting your dummy out at the ASDA folks and get on with the job you’re being paid to do. :bulb: :open_mouth:

Drama Queen indeed :open_mouth:. Well, I’m still owed for them without promise of payment, so we shall see what gives . For the last couple of years, the haulage industry has been very much for me, so it would seem it’s just this particular company :unamused: & would you please tell me, where in my post, it says I am spitting my dummy at the ASDA folks, actually I found them quite a decent bunch when I delivered to them for the company I was working for :unamused:. Who needs the reality check at the moment :open_mouth::lol:.

Well I back Lib on this one as I have had companies refuse to reimburse for night out maoney, Tolls and phone. Maybe you have just been lucky Laybybob, or maybe you like being taken advantage of, in which case it is attitudes like that that cause the problems for those of us who

  1. Don’t want to bankroll a company
  2. Can’t afford to bankroll a company

Every pound I have to pay out of my own pocket is pound that comes off of our food bill or mortgage, And I cant afford to do that.

Workers in other industries and our ‘superiors’ in this one probably claim 50p per sheet of bog paper for every crap they take.

I don’t see why a moan about some cheating company isn’t in order. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah okay, well the company who you’re working for/contracted to then.

:open_mouth:

And what did you mean by the word “alleged?” Laybyebob. I would be getting on with the job I’m being paid to do, but making sure I’m not out of pocket whilst doing it .

No. I use my common sense and take ample cash with me to ensure that such situations don’t arise.

I just don’t understand where this modern day big-attitude thing comes from  . You’ll all the same you young 'uns - refusing to take wagons out because they’ve got a small chip in the screen or there’s a scratch on the bumper or it’s not an 05-reg plate XF530 with all the bells and whistles. :unamused:

I remember times in the past when I’ve filled up the company’s wagon on my own credit card to the tune of £250 on one occasion because of an oversight by the gaffer and to get him out of the [zb] and here you are moaning about a £3 toll and ‘I can’t afford to take that sort of money with me’ quoting another.

It’s no wonder the haulage industry is in such a mess. Drivers only doing stuff if there’s something in it for themselves. Marvellous. :unamused:

I’d fill a motor on my credit card if I’d worked for the guy for about 5 years I reckon, as long as he was a fairly close relation as well.

You are so far off of the mark I’m afraid Laybybobb, It is people with your attitude that are killing the industry. When I started driving I never had to find any money out of my own pocket, even my night out money was paid upfront out of petty cash. On one job I was going to have to go accross the severn bridge all week, that would have cost £75, it would then have been another week until I got that back, I have a family to support and £75 is one and a half weeks food bill for us, You might be in the lucky position to not have to worry about £75 but I do, So don’t you dare accuse me of being a Drama Queen. If you want to fund someones company then go ahead, your the mug not us. And you say you put £250 on your credit card, well that just shows that you are clearly becoming senile, I bet you even send your bank details to those poor Nigerians who need help to get money out of their country :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

…oh yeah and I’d want a blood oath about paying it back as soon as I got back to the yard.

…and his watch as security

…and maybe his firstborn.

Well, I’ve nothing to say in reply to that as your signature sums up your reply perfectly.

:smiling_imp:

Seriously though, I’ve put myself out for companies when I was younger and more naive, it never got me anywhere. They just took it for granted that they could use me after that. Never to the tune of £250 advances, but phone calls, deliveries in my car on the way home, etc…plenty of that.

laybybobb:

Now that does not surprise me, Maybe you forgot what you were going to say, must be that senile thing starting to affect your memory as well as your logic. Perhaps you ought to think about retirement before you loose all your faculties

Would also suggest that if you ever need a job you should apply to M.A.T. Transport, as you obviously enjoy being walked over
