Driving through (or around) Leicester with a 14'10" trailer

I assume this is the footbridge on at A607 as you approach the Asda island at the top end of Thurmaston? In which case it ain’t that low?

Next time you come off the A46 onto the A607 City bound you will see the signs. They are basically three warnings covering the three lanes and situated just before the first big roundabout so you have chance to turn around. Definitely says 14’6". It must be for the foot bridge.

where are you heading for Tris?

Stamford area.

i’d have thought come off the M1 at J21,A5460 i think it is, to Oadby and the racecourse,right at the racecourse roundabout,swing a left signposted A47 Peterborough,follow the road up towards the General Hospital,and just follow the signs for A47 Peterborough.that’s the way us locals go.i think the low bridge you mention is on the D/C near Asda.

Now that’s a blast from the past, used to use that route to/from Norwich/N Norfolk, in a time before the A14. I regularly load in Desford and go to Peterborough. I’ve been wondering were that route was as I couldn’t remember. Just for a laugh I sometimes follow the 47 right into the City, and use the inner ring and 47 out. Usually I go left at the park and ride, near the Braunstone frith ind est, I think that’s what its called, then drop on the 46 near Widdowsons Glenfield yard. Where incidently Frans Maas(Brownhills) had a satelite yard in the mid 90’s. You local lads would have some thoughts on that, that I’d be interested to hear, never to big or clever for some friendly advice :wink:

Also in many days gone past, would come round the inner ring, onto the 47, then onto what I think you locals call the “golden mile” then pop onto the M69 for the Midlands, that A14 has made life quite boring :wink:

No, similar but there’s three. Look out for it next time you turn off the 46 onto Melton rd into Leicester. They are probably new signs.

Cheers, yep that’s what I need to do.

Actually I think it was three round ones like this

hirstsigns.co.uk/roadsigns/maxheight.gif

What’s the difference between round and triangles?

All so confusing innit.

That really does reinforce just how useless the DCPC has been. After 35 hours of ‘training’ someone has to ask what vocational specific roadsigns mean.

triangle = warning
round = order

Ha ha, does it really matter, I know the stuff in the middle means.

I thought I’d be ok going up the M1, across on the A46, down the A607 towards Leicester before hitting the ring road and joining the A47 East, but got going down the A607 and was met with 14’ 6" bridge signs across all three lanes so did an about turn at the roundabout and went via Melton etc. On the Southern ring road there’s a 14’ 4" bridge on my route. Any advice would be appreciated for future. Only rarely take a trailer out over 14’ 2".

When coming back from Kings Lynn with a 16’ double decker, I follow the A47 all the way up to the wide road at the top of the hill with the right hand filter lane, chuck a right, follow the signs for M1 north, A563 and A607 and that puts me on the A46 south until I turn off on the A50.
Now isn’t this the reverse of the way you wish to go? (Apart from the A50).
This is the outer ring road I’ve always used.

Yes mate, that’s the reverse of the route I was going to take until I saw the mandatory 14’6" signs just prior to the first roundabout on the 607 after I’d come off the 46. They are probably new signs. Next week I’ll make a point of taking a 14’2" trailer along the route to double check what I’m saying is correct. Chances are the signs are new. Probably don’t have any for hgvs coming the other way lol.

I come down there every Friday on my way home, never seen the signs you’re mentioning, the only bridge on that route is the footbridge before asda, and the signs Rog put up are for that, definitely no problem for a 14’10" trl.

I must admit that the first time I came along that route I was checking traffic coming the other way just to be sure that there were other double deckers!

It’s always nice to see a double decker on your route.

I’ve got another question for those with Leicester knowledge. To get to the aggregate yard near Ratby can you go through Kirby Muxloe on the A5380? Or do you have to go up the A50, go through Botcheston, do a left towards Kirby Muxloe and another left towards Ratby with the yard then on the right. It’s a ■■■■■■■ pain that area with weight restrictions.

is it the brick yard you are going to? Hansons?

the ‘golden mile’..known by some (not me though :slight_smile: ),as the ‘khyber pass’ :laughing:

Think youll find thats Belgrave road, the long stretch between Gypsy lane lights and the flyover :wink:
many many jewelers shops selling 22ct , hence the name .
.
.
`The mad mile ’ - is the stretch dual carriageway from Braunstone lane lights (Premier Inn) to Asda Fosse pk roundabout City bound & Outbound , Narborough rd S. A5460 :wink:
