The Highway Code book - Rule 104:
The speed limit is the absolute maximum and does not mean it is safe to drive at that speed irrespective of conditions. Driving at speeds too fast for the road and traffic conditions can be dangerous.
Rule 124:
do not treat speed limits as a target. It is often not appropriate or safe to drive at the maximum speed limit
Wayne:
When you take you test whether it be car or Lorry you are expected to drive to the speed limits if it is safe to do so and not hinder other road user’s.
What is being said here is that drivers doing 50 on a clear motorway in the middle lane (or any lane) are a pain in the backside and down right dangerous. I try to do 56 at all times on motorways if I feel its safe.
Those who say they are paid by the hour so drive slower really p me of.
If i was on 50 quid an hour I would still do 56 because I have a life out side of a cab.

And what are the quotes for driving too slowly, Andy
Well, to tell you the truth Rob… I could have sworn that there was in fact a Minimum speed limit on Motorways… But I cant for the life of me, find it…
But cant seem to find anything about going to slow…
BUT, I do agree, that there are people that drive so slowly, or in the wrong lanes, and they shouldnt be allowed on motorways… not until they have had some training…
As far as I remember the minimum speed on a motorway is 30 mph.
I run at 50 - 53 mph on motorways for many reasons. It’s more economical, it’s far less stressful, the ones who want to run ob the limiter can get past me quickly and easily, it keeps me well out of the “I’m half a kilometre faster than you so I’m going to get past regardless” brigade. If you need a little extra speed because a situation develops you have it, on the limiter you don’t i.e. if you have a front wheel blow out you need to be able to accelerate a bit to regain control and if you are on the limiter already you can’t do that.
At the end of a 9 hour day the difference in total distance covered between 50, 53 or 56 mph is very little; the 56 mph guy is nowhere near 54 miles ahead of the 50 mph driver.
Another thing is that most of the European motorways have a 50 mph limit for trucks with a higher limit for cars than in the UK and despite the fact that many of their motorways are only two lanes everything generally co exists quite happily at those speeds.
Continental m-ways also have overtaking bans for trucks (inclines and near towns) and have far more crawler lanes than in the UK for the really steep bits. This seems to work pretty well.
Rob — the domino effect you spelt out is also caused by unladen trucks overtaking the laden ones. You move out to Lane2 at 56, so those in Lane2 move out to Lane3 etc etc.
Three trucks I drive behave differently on the limiter — 57, 55 & 53 respectively — readings taken from GPS (btw, all calibrated at the same centre!).
57 is great. I sit in with the other trucks in Lane 1, but have that little extra for overtaking.
55 isn’t too bad.
53 is awful. Screws up your positioning — its very difficult to get out to overtake anything when all the other trucks are coming by at 56. Good thing with this truck is that it’s overpowered and keeps its speed up all the hills!
Doing 50 on A class trunk roads is too much over the limit for my liking — 45 is about right to keep the points off the licence.
Rob - You need to have a long hard think about your tailgating capers and jumping out the cab to have a pop at people (especially at women!).

I don’t need to do anything of the sort and since when did you become God
That could constitute as a personal attack should I be bothered by it.
This web forum is rapidly becoming the biggest do-gooder site on the interweb or there’s a hell of a lot of liars on here
Every thread you read, - “oh no, I never break the speed limits… I always stick religiously to 40mph on single carriageway roads… ooh, tailgating is sooooo dangerous, I never tailgate and never, ever have done, I always leave a minimum of 2 seconds between myself and the vehicle in front and always make sure I double that when it rains… I always ease off on a dual-carriageway when another wagon pulls out to overtake me…”
What an utter load of [ZB]
Where do all you lot drive then It sure as hell isn’t on the roads in this country When was the last time you saw a wagon doing 40mph on a single carriageway road Do you all drive for Tesco’s now then
And of course, you’re nearly getting to your 2 seconds distance from the wagon in front so you’d better pull out and start your 25 mile overtaking manoeuvre hadn’t you; 50 miles in the wet
We could just see how perfect you all are, as you endlessly claim on here despite no evidence to back up what you say, by fitting secret cameras in your cabs and then later watching the tape to see first hand. I’ll bet a large wad of cash that the majority are in actual fact in the same bracket as most - 50mph(+) on single carriageways, +/-30ft off the back of the vehicle in front before pulling out etc. But oh no, they don’t have the guts to admit it on here because they know they’ll get a ■■■■ good flaming and it’s much easier to flame others
I’m not afraid to admit I’m no angel on the road but on the whole I drive safely and courteously and my accident free history goes some way to backing that up.
Robk — I’m no angel either and no, I’m not in the do gooder category. But tailgating is dangerous, as is inappropriate speed. What you’re doing is intimidating other road users. And you’ve admitted on other topics to trying to push other trucks along.
Its not your job to enforce the law. And, like I said, jumping out the cab to have a rant at another road user (female in this case) sounds like an anger management thing to me.
People come on here to share views and get help — some take good advice onboard, others don’t. That’s life!
Hi Rob, I hope you’ve got a refund of all those anger management courses cos they obviously haven’t worked - and I don’t know how old you are but just think about your blood pressure - just overtake someone who is going slower than you - and if yu can’t get past then pour a cuppa and smoke a rollie and chill out.
How come a simple observation about driving in the middle lane at 50 mph turned into a full blown slanging match about everybodies elses driving standards.
When I’m on the motorway in my old bus it will only run at 48 mph (slower up hills due to 5 pot Gardner!) so this is the speed we drive at - in the inside lane. If other traffic wishes to overtake then they use the other lanes. Using some of the arguments in this thread we shouldn’t be on the motoway at all but realistically there is no easy alternative when a motorway is available.
During the week I drive an Iveco 7.5 tonner, which according to other posts in this thread should be thrashed in lane 3 at 80 mph plus. Tough, it gets driven within the speed limit and if I want to drive down lane 1 at lower speeds I do.
I believe the minimum speed on a motorway is 25 mph. There is a sign on the A45 around Northampton banning “Slow Vehicles” from an overpass, the sign defines Slow vehicles as ones that do less than 25 mph. I remember once driving an old double decker bus on the M1 near Sheffield at its top speed of 33 mph and had to move into lane 2 at one stage to overtake a police car!!

Last time I looked in the mirror while on a single carriageway road.
What’s the hurry■■?
I use to fly around like a chimp on acid but now I cant be bothered and I run at what speed I consider safe, big single carriage ways I run at 50 which is breaking the law but if I consider it safe at that speed I will do it and if I run up against someone doing 40 I will sit behind him or her and plod along and not get red in the face and wet my pants trying to push them along the road lifes to short for that sort of pony and trap

Other road users especially car drivers are a pain, it won’t change. So you have a choice get stressed and burst a blood vessel everytime some old couple dawdle in front of you and some smug git in his BMW cuts in front. The other option is to just expcept it and let it go, whats the point of letting your standards slip because the rest of the world can’t drive.
The same goes with speed, yes you can drive up to the limiter everywhere, keeping an eye for the cameras or plod, or relax and drive a bit slower and worry less, over a day it won’t make much differance to journey, but you’ll feel much more relaxed.
Remember “don’t worry be happy” now pass that spliff round it’s my turn.
