Driving in Canada.

Hi all… i was wondering if any ex pats would be interested in showing someone around… so they can get to see and find out first hand what it is like to be over in Canada… I mean this could be a win win for opportunity… for both people… i mean if you had a decent room to rent or somewhere you could site a decent size caravan or mobile type home to rent out… one you could help show people the way things work out there … ie with bills renting buying property… best way to buy cars and so on … and if you are aloud or would not mind some company take someone out with you on a few trip …in the end you make a bit of money … and along the way help some fulfil a dream … i leave it with you to ponder over …

Its been done before, and usually ends in tears. Bill paying is done by writing cheques, car buying is done by deciding what kind of vehicle you want then haggling over the price with the seller. House buying is done with Realtor, lawyers etc, Dream fulfillment gets done at the local ■■■■■ house or by a ■■■■■■ under a bridge !!!

Hi cockney, yes it has been done before, a few guys have put people up and give them the tour (so to speak), my self included, my cousin and her family move here this spring as a result of one such visit. you are from Northampton i see, i came from nr Wellingborough!

You can exchange some licences for an Alberta class 5 licence.

You cannot exchange a licence from Ireland (north or south).
You must take the full test for a car licence too, unless you exchange a licence from a few countries which have reciprocal arrangements with Alberta.

Bad luck if you hold an Irish licence.

You must also have had your UK licence for more than 2 years, if you dont then you get a Class 5 GDL . (Graduated Drivers Licence) which is quite restrictive. eg. Curfews and limits on passengers etc.

I know because i thought about getting my wife to pass her uk car licence before she comes out here in June. But found it was a pointless exercise.

Thanks for the replies lads I kinda of knew that there was a bit of BS going on regarding exhanging licences considering a Canadian would have to resit there car test plus class 1 in Ireland,If I manage to get the name of the company I will post it here so maybe we could get some feedback wether it be pos/neg.

Both my wife and son passed their test in Canada, exchanged uk provisional licences, and got full unrestricted class 5 Canadian licences because the length of time they had held a provisional was taken into account.
