12 miles is a bit far to walk twice a day.
Tipper Tom:
I’d have had to walk for 6 years I grew up in the middle of no where and started full time work at 15 on a dairy farm.I honestly believe accidents would be reduced if the unrestricted driving age was increased
Accidents would be reduced if the driving age was raised to 30 and the licence taken away at 60, not a sensible answer to the problem though is it
I took my class one in '83, straight from a full motorbike licence, never had a car driving lesson! when i took my HGV i wasn’t allowed to go onto the motorway as i had to train on ‘double ‘L’ s’ i had the old HGV L plate, plus had to put a standard car L plate on as well!
I’m not so sure it’s the standard of training it’s the test that’s woefully out of date.
The instructors are teaching people to pass a test not drive.
You get taught a series of manouvers to pass a test and of you go.
Given more youngsters are getting cars at 17 they are simply churning them out.
I took one of those much derided Armed Forces courses that everone rips the mick out of on here.
But we doidn’t do the two laps round the parade square for a license.
We did half day driving and half day theory (highway code etc) plus maintenance how to check the enging change a wheel etc.
A full days driving one day a week.
After passing our test before we were allowed out on our own we did night driving, motorway driving, pararel parking and skid pan.
We then drove different vehicles such as Landrovers, Sherpas.
We were then assesed and if we needed extra experiance off we went to unit just with a car license.
I was lucky and was streamed to do my HGV3
So I went on a weeks (possibly two weeks) long course of load and restraint how to strap, chain and rope and sheet.
Once you passed that you went onto HGV training.
You couldn’t do 1 or 2 without having passed 3
Maybe if they made the test harder and brought it more in line with the Germans the standard of driving might be raised.
Also clamp down on our friends from round the world driving
I saw a car go round a roundabout the wrong way the other day.
I just sat there and watched him pass by and go on his way not a care in the world.
My ex girlfriend passed her test in Cyprus.
I say test because she never actually went near the test centre.
We bought a Fiat 500 of a bloke and mentioned it was for her to learn to drive in.
He mentioned his brother was an examiner and he would sort it.
Left all her details and the test certificate arrived with the car doc’s
We got her the full license and I taught her to drive
When we came back to the UK she traded it for a full UK license no questions asked.
