If it’s depot to hub work then it ain’t line haul,

It was when I worked as a linehaul driver for them.

I remember an argument when absolutely no-one on this forum, except me, could correctly define what a “tramper” was.
.
I ain’t got a clue what “linehaul” is.

Nor me, sounds like another bloody unwanted unwarranted Americanism.

Night parcel trunker cover it?

Night trunk driver ( direct depot to depot pre loaded trailer/box swaps or changeovers = linehaul ).
Depot to hub ( call it around 2 hours driving max, sit around watching tele during the sort/transhipment, ( oops oh wait that will never do ), work in the hub on arrival on the sort/transhipping loads ( which defines hub system operations ) = Feeder Driver.Feel free to make ‘Feeder’ ( warehouse labourer/local hub run driver ) = night trunk driver.Oh wait just drop the Feeder description and just call it all Linehaul that’ll fix it ( for the naive ). :smiling_imp:

It’s hard to make a case for premium wages, if the job mainly entails sitting on your arse/watching tv/sleeping for a few hours whilst your waiting for your black load. It takes no skill to drive from one hub/depot to the next, wait, and back. If I was a boss, I’d offer minimum wage.

When I started out in the Netherlands, my first ‘proper’ job was driving a night run, from the Enschede depot to the hub in Utrecht, picking up boxes/crates and cages at some depots/lock-ups along the way. In Utrecht, drivers would unload the cages from their own trailers, onto the bay. Then we would sit in the canteen/sleep in the cab (if you had a sleeper cab), until we’d get the shout that the cages were ready to reload. Load your own trailer, and set of back , dropping of cages and boxes along the route again.

I think there’s a fundamental difference between UK drivers, and Continental drivers, and that’s why drivers on the continent are beter regarded by the public at large, and beter paid…

No drivers ‘on the continent’ generally will be found driving that drawbar outfit doing direct depot to depot or hub to hub pre loaded box swaps sometimes if not often across Europe. You know the clue is in the job title ‘driver’ not warehouse labourer.

While Brits, with a few exceptions, will usually find themselves lumbered with UK hub system dross in which the guvnor decides that ‘drivers’ should work as warehouse labourers on the ‘sort’ and to add insult to injury that forming the majority of the shift. He just ain’t going to pay them any wage to sit in the cab watching the tele during the transhipment/sort operations.( Don’t ask how I know that ).

Hi
Any one know how job it’s look like at Chelmsford depot? For a night driver linehaul and what it’s the rates of pay?.

blue estate:
Any one do this type of work ?
Is it cleaner and easier than normal general haulage as I’m getting fed up of getting muddy or covered in wet cardboard slurry and being an unpaid security guard

What changed for you in the last few months? You were really up for getting your class 1 and doing the job you have now, 3/4/5 years?
