Don't buy snooper

I had a Snooper last year. Found him at the bottom of the garden clutching a pair of Mrs B’s knickers.

Physical conflict was being prepared when the fella said " Please don’t hurt me mate, I’m homeless and just need a few things ".

I felt sorry for him and let him go. At least he has a tent now.

Do we have anyone who knows if Garmin or TomTom customer repair services are any better?

As my experience of customer services is that it’s wonderful while you are buying, and that’s basically where it ends…

Probably not, but my point was more that a £400 device lasted only 18 months.

I pay about £10 to £15 for my Truckers Atlas. I don’t expect it to last more than 2 years, when loose pages start to become unreadable. . I just buy a new one.

Are we saying here that a 300quid+ sat nav aint worth the money.
Who would have thought it eh.? :unamused:

Sat navs have made the job easier, no doubt about that.
I use a basic one myself, and even though I ran for years without one…(when you had no choice, :bulb: ). I would not be without it now for it’s convenience and guidance.

However I will never understand why any driver…old or new, needs the level of guidance and arse wiping that these things give, and why anyone thinks it is reasonable to splash out that amount of cash for one, when they are clearly over priced, also is beyond me.

I’ve said before on these sat navs threads…(yeh I know yawn [zb] yawn  …) If I needed that level of guidance, I wouldn’t do the [zb] job…end of.

Don’t want to start sounding like Desypete, so I’ll knock it on the head now.
Thanks for putting up with my ramblings.

TBH Rob I bought mine more for the DAB radio, TV feature and handsfree side of it, was also for the weight limit feature as some of the accesses we go to in London are a nightmare. There is a lot of waiting around in my job so comes in very handy for that.

If I’d only wanted it for guidance I’d have stuck with my old tom tom as it was miles better on that side than this ever will be. I only ever use it for guidance for the last few miles, the majority of the route I use my own knowledge for :grimacing: :grimacing:

Yeh,…I aint saying that some of the features aren’t handy as I am sure they must be, it’s just the price that would put me off, and that’s even if I needed one.
I just find it amazing that it has got to the stage now with a lot of drivers that a sat nav is looked on as an absolute essential necessity rather than a handy accessory, which is bad enough, but worse it has got to the point that if they have not got all these sophisticated over the top features at hand they would not go out of the yard. :open_mouth: :unamused:

My mate who is well experienced got a one a couple of weeks ago for the thick end of 400 quid.
After I ripped the ■■■■ out of him, he reneged and admitted it was made more for clueless idiots with no initiative, and took all the thinking and decision making out of the job. He decided he did not really need it, so he took it back and got a basic one.

(Btw not saying some of you guys are clueless idiots, it is just the phrase he used)

Mate, if I could buy a bog that wiped my arse for me, I’d be having one!!

Yes there is an argument that a good driver SHOULDN’T need one, but there is a counter argument that a good driver would be a fool not to use all available to make their life/job easier. Of course this relies on a good driver knowing when to tell the Pratt-Nav to go do one, and that’s probably where the problem often lies, especially when you see these moronic bridge strikes and HGV’s stuck in tiny little lanes.

Personally I love my £280 TomTom, as it generally makes life a breeze, but would I follow it blindly, would I ■■■■!!!

However it’s each to their own, and I believe both sides of the argument are valid…

A lot of what you say is right mate, but do you not think that it has got to the stage now where everything is done for you, and where every decision is made for you with these things, that now the tail wags the dog. The truck drives the driver.
That aint as you say ‘making life and the job easier’ it is more dumbing it down to death.
However as you say bud, each to their own, and we’ll agree to differ.

I can’t disagree that it does dumb the job down, but that horse has bolted now and just because you are resisting, you sadly can’t hold back the steam train. It’s gone now mate, left the station! And all we can do now is the best we can, with what we have…

Anyway, I’m sure there were plenty of muppets back when you were a nip trying to look like Smokey and the Bandit  And there are still plenty of muppets about today. But what has changed is that anytime a muppet does something ridiculously stupid now, it’s all over the tinterweb in minutes!

robroy:

i’d extrapolate that one on the whole society / civilisation level - i think in average people a now dumber than say 20 years ago, buts thats a different story

Tomtom customer service has to be the worst I’ve ever experienced.
I’ve been using thier sat navs for around 10 years and I think I’ve owned about 6 different models.
Every single one has broken in some way just outside the warranty.
The most memorable experiences I’ve had with them are…

GPS stopped tracking, making device pointless. It was about 3 weeks outside warranty, so I emailed them asking if they could help. After the usual automated responses of turn it off and on again, they finally agreed to have a look it, if I paid them £70 up front. I told them to swivel as the device wasn’t even worth that. I stuck it on eBay as broken and a pole bought it for £40.

Screen kept going weird, this time about 6 months outside warranty, again they wanted £70 just to look at it… Put it on eBay as broken, pole bought it for £115.

The tomtom kept bugging me to update the maps, so I paid the £50 or so, plugged it in to my pc and let it do its thing. Everything went fine and it said download completed so next day I’m out and turn it on and it said no valid maps on device.
I get home, plug it in to the pc and it says it needs to download a map. I try and download the one I paid for again and it says I’ve no valid license for it.

I contact customer service and explain the error, expecting them to give me a valid code, but no… They tell me, without apology that I need to rebuy and re download the map, even though they can clearly see I paid for it the day before.
I’m not one to usually get angry and swear at people, but this guy got both barrels and more. I vowed never to buy tomtom again. I stuck it on eBay as broken and a pole bought it for £100

I bought a garmin which I used for a while, and it was ok, but the screen layout just wasn’t as good as tomtom.
When I started driving bigger vehicles I decided, against my better judgement to buy a tomtom truck.
I’ve had it about a year and a half and it just started to loose GPS signal every so often. Some days it will take 3 hours before it even picks up a signal.
I’ve updated it to no avail, so I can see this one going the same way as all the others… To Poland.

why don’t you just fork out 30 quid for the chinky ones from ebay…they do the damage and if they go wrong then its a Frisbee at the 1st ham shank that wont get out of the way if your in a hurry…just as good quality and last just as long…7 inch ones if you want to look more like a flipflop with it stuck on the dash…

Watch the video here.

I bought a MIO about 15 years ago, still going strong and gets me to where i want to go, no fancy stuff on it, just a warning about speed cameras…got a map book should it ever go wrong.

It takes alot of guess work out of the job most of our work is to highstreet shops one our guys runs a car satnav and is at least 4-5 times a week stuggles to get in to a few drop due to bridges and weight limits. When I do tue same drops om straight in as it works out the way avoiding weight and height limits

Had mine abt a year I’d guess and had no issues with it at all ,

Best one out there imho is the garmin Lumi 58. I dont use it that often as i prefer a map and not for speed limits either though, my tacho does that just fine…
