Anyone notice discrepancies in the tare weights that different weighbridges give you?
Most tare me around 12700 to 12800 but one tares me at 12400.
I reckon the “12400” weighbridge is the one a lot of the bodybuilders must use when they claim certain payloads.
I did see a Euro 6 MAN 32400 with Thompson Loadmaster, tare in a 13400. Not bad all things considered.
Some interesting tipper trials in T and D and Trucking this month. MJ Church Arocs v MAN, both with identical Charlton bodies; Arocs tares at 13t, MAN at 13360. Arocs won the trial but it’s cab was pokey inside in comparison.
In Trucking they had an Arocs v Renault Range C. No mention of payload but the Arocs was noted for its’ shocking ride and the Renault with its’ poor steering lock. The only mention of payload in this feature was along the lines of “it doesn’t matter that much.”
I think if I get a choice when we do get a new one it’ll be Daf, Volvo, MAN.
I reckon Scania with a Boweld Mucklight body will be very difficult to beat. Expect the bill to be in the region of £107-8 thousand that may well be hard to justify against the very capable and significantly cheaper Daf.

Resale on the scania to be significantly better though?

Yeah, I saw those articles, to be honest, with the merc, you can spec so much from the chassis thickness to the to the engine rating (apparently you can spec the 630hp engine, like you’d need it at 32ton) it wouldn’t surprise me if the spec is wrong.
F-reds you are definatly right there, but it has to be paid for initially.
Is the Boweld Mucklight lighter than the Taperlight? Taperlight is very popular around here (due to the pre built deals with Volvo).
Looking closely at that Enviro Clean Arocs, the body looks like it’s been taken off an older truck. The bodybuilders’ plates are missing and it’s clearly battered, either that or the driver is an absolute animal. The mag says that both trucks have Abba Predator bodies, I suggest they look again; The Arocs looks like a Thompson Loadmaster, albeit with awful looking greedy boards. Could the rough ride be blamed on the body?
I’ve spoke to a few people who drive them all say they are uncomfortable and ride rough.
A few recon they ain’t much cop off road but I’m told that’s to do with what gearbox is speced don’t know how true that is though.
I’ve seen a few fairly new ex Joywheel motors with alloy Thompson Sandmaster bodies on truck trader, what’s the deal with them? Their website wasn’t working either…
J.C Balls have just put 3 6x4s on the road according to Thompsons’ website. Arocs with steel stonemaster bodies with a payload of 15.300. That’s bloody good. I reckon a stonemaster with a grab crane would suit us.
I run fuel tankers and get paid per litre so payload is important for me, 31t is my target payload when buying a unit so lightweight midlift and alloys etc are always on my list of must haves.
We’re in a funny cross over of tipper work; We do muckshifting by the load but also sell stuff by the ton and by load. We pay to tip by the load but as we send out a lot of soil screen waste it’s in our interest to get the maximum tonnage. Same with our grab tipper it does most work on the load but backloads aggregate and does crane off deliveries so payload is important there too. We can get 13 on our MAN 6w grab but new trucks are struggling to get 12t on.
When the boss orders a new one it might have to have some lightweight steel body, modified to suit a crane.

They packed up a couple of months ago.

Was that forced to pack up, as in BHS style? The motors for sale on CM website were in really good condition, would’ve been a good buy for us.
Had enough so I hear they was more of a ground work and plant firm and the lorry’s were mainly to cover there work.
I’ve known a few people who used to buy there old motors and was always well looked after.
I remembered this thread this morning because of a new Daf 8w I saw near Stow on The Wold. CF Construction with what I call “an alloy muckshift body” and the payload plate on it’s side said “20t”. I think it was a Kelberg judging from the style of the badge and I thought this was a very impressive payload. Then I considered the work I’ve done most recently (demolition rubble, clay and topsoil); Would the extra 1-1.5t per load be of benefit when you consider repairs and re-flooring over a tippers’ lifetime, and the fact that most of of our work is paid by the load?
Smiths bought some Wilcox alloy bodies last year and wont buy anymore because they need to have a cross member between the tailgate posts, hence the tailgates aren’t double hinged like Thompson and Charlton ones. From what Smiths drivers have said the 1t payload benefit is wiped out because of damage risks so Charltons’ are now the preferred body builder.
What’s the story with those “Cloburn” high specced 8wheelers and artics for sale every now and again in CM??
Only a year or so old yet selling them,
Surely must lose wild money from when new??!!![emoji52]

If it’s like some subbies around here, they buy new because “Mr I have a company facebook page I post ■■■■■■■■ on” has just bought one so they must have one.
Lots of Merc Arocs for sale I’ve noticed; Are they ex demos or are they so bad the operators have returned them?
I’ve had to tip at Shipton on Cherwell quarry quite a bit in the last few days as a muckshift I’m doing is all clay-soil so not suitable (or wanted) at our usual tip (Sheehans’ wash plant at Stanton Harcourt). To tip an 8w load is £110! Maybe you do need an alloy body on muckshifting so you get your moneys’ worth.
