Dodgy Permit:
Traffic Patina ?
Dear O Lord.
We used to call it ‘traffic film’ when I was young, but as I haven’t heard the expression for many years, I thought it might be misunderstood

Almost all these pics are of trucks on ME work or similar.
I reckon if you looked in the cabs of nearly all of them they would be spotlessly clean.
Quite right Mr Smith, when I started, I wondered why so many of the older lads were wearing ‘Dutch Clogs’, the ones with the open back type.
The reason being was so that you could slip them off easily when you got back into the cab. I must admit that I never wore a pair, and I often had a chuckle seeing some of those ‘furry’ ones.
I did work with one bloke who had a Foden Fleetmaster for four years and it was still immaculate when they gave him a new M.A.N. 22,321.
He used to keep a small pastry brush on his dashboard and when I asked what it was for, he showed me by brushing out the dust that was lodged around all the dials.
Having said that, I think that most firms had a “Jed Clampett” working for them.

To be honest, it was well-nigh impossible to keep a cab clean on that work. It was the dust, especially in the desert where it was very fine dust. If you hit a sand-storm your cab would fill up with dust so fine it was like powder; and it got everywhere!

Yes Ro, they used to hire a few trailers when they were very busy, especially low loaders and fridges.
