Why the box on the bulkhead - looks like an ex fridge ?
Hi Suedehead
I hvnt got a clue it was open on the inside so may well have had a cooler at one time this trailer was bloody old, a Fridge no, the walls were plywood and very thin it used to bend like a rubber band it fell apart in the mid 80s dont know what happened to it I think it ended up round the back of one of the warehouses and was used for truck parts storage by the Astrans mechanic Tony ,who was killed in a road accident a few years ago.
Cheers Roger Haywood
Was once talking to TruckerAsh about this trailer, The box on the bulkhead was, I think, a tool box

May have had before my time with Astrans but was empty when I pulled the trailer never did ask what it was used for, bit hard to get up there for tools, will check with John Bruce or Barry Barnes ,maybe Ash knows more than I do ,all I know is I did 5 trips with this trailer and it was a wreck ,but it always got me there and back , apart from the tyres it used to eat ,they were the old type with tubed tyres, the drums were also very small.
Roger
Roger
totally agree with you on that one, I wouldn’t fancy climbing up there for tools either…
Regards.
Jerry

There was an Astran (Asian Transport), step frame box van sat in behind Intramasses office in Doha for a few years in the late seventies. It had a domestic type air con unit mounted on the outside of it up the front. it was used as a drivers rest room for a while and was a welcome respite from the heat on a hot day. I found John Willie in there one day stripping down a turbo on the table enjoying the cool air from the a/c. It was later sold or hired out to the company that ran the double bottoms from Sharsha to Doha. Two of their trucks a bonneted White and a scania 140 were driven by two north east lads (ex Duncan Mc Rae drivers) called ■■■■ and Vick. They would use the box van as their accomodation when they were tipping the double bottoms in Doha. As i have not seen the Destination Doha film for many years I dont know if it is the same trailer, but it rang a bell when someone mentioned a box up on the front and i just wondered if that was where the a/c was and if the trailer had been recommisioned, perhaps Roger can help. Regards Jamie.

Yes I remember that trailer but it was fitted out with a couple of beds and a table and chairs ,also remember going to (whookra ) cant spell it right a few clicks away fishing with Andrew Wilson Young and brought the fish back and John Willie made a fab fish dish for about 6 of us,while we all tried to claim the 1000Riyals put up by Intramass to any driver that could Reverse a double bottom in a straight line for 50 mtrs, dont think its been won yet,so I dont think this is the same trailer ,but I could be wrong ,but when u think about it Dave poulton pulled the trailer in 77 on the film and it was 79 that we had the meal cooked by John willie, and I pulled the trailer in the early 80s to 83 so must be another one ,me brain hurts now.
Roger
Are none of those Astran drivers off the movie on here or does anyone know them?
I love all this ‘speculation’ about the trailer. Was it or was it not the one in the film that was later spotted in Intramas yard Doha ? …ur…no.
Sinbin: The trailer you pulled dated back to the very early 70’s and was indeed totally knackered in later years. Dave Poulton used it regularly and accessed the ‘tool box’ mounted on the front of the trailer via his ladders and roof rack on his Scania.
I know ALL the answers though and all and more will be revealed in ‘the book’… due out in May by the way!
There is a whole chapter dedicated to the film Destination Doha as well. Some fantastic pics and lots of really great info too!
Not long to wait now…Ash.

Not on top form today so having a lazy day, just watching DD - I love the bit were Hooky is on a pay phone at Folkestone and if you look at the wall you can see the holes in the breeze blocks that were the result of drivers twisting and turning the next coin that they were going to insert
