one of my neighbours (before he came to Canada) was with DeRooy for donkeys yrs we used to talk about it at the local bar…what he did was ,6months working then a month off to recover /get his head back in the game again and repeat ,reconned the money was good but you earned it.
In todays Southampton Echo news site, a truck at Portsmouth was stopped and the driver of a “piggyback” truck was fined for being asleep in the vehicle as was the driver of the truck carrying it.
This was in the last few days.
Asleep at the wheel? So the article says. Where was he driving?

Typical ■■■■ online news 'reporting '. Very confused and incorrect. One driver mentioned as being asleep. Then both drivers fined a £1000. What for? May be completely made up anyway.

Would possibly be worth going to court over, would most probably lose but it would be an interesting caseWhat happened to your plans of becoming the next Kavanagh QC Luke?
I had you pencilled in for my next case.
( I’m up shortly for ‘Caught in Possession’ …of Offensive frilly tassels and Cowboy boots )Two years in I realised I want very good at it and wasnt getting better so knocked it on the head. Bit of a shame but one has to be realistic
Only fairly smart people tend to be self-aware enough to realise their limitations.
years ago i piggybacked my truck after it blew up onto the empty trailer, then drove the thing heading back to glasgow with the other dude kipping in my cab as the one i was driving was a day cab, plus he had been driving a cpl days with no sleep before getting sent to lift me…up from walsall to bells at carlisle…stops for grub and bangs him up to get fed…the nugget jumps up and hops out ,drops a good 10 feet, and its next drop carlisle hospital with broken ankles as he forgot he was on top of the trailer…
OUCH…diesel, what a shock for him eh !!..as for then original post, i think it was perfectly legal to take a rest break …but only if he put it on break…whilst travelling as a passenger in the other truck…as its illegal to travel in a trailer, caravan etc…that was his fault for being a plum…and why wouldnt he want to be in the same cab as his mate.■■?..who knows.

It’s perfectly legal to take a break in a moving vehicle, but not a rest. Has to be one or the other - there’s no such thing as a “rest break” under drivers’ hours regs.
The TM’s at DeRooys are at the top of the tree, they know every loophole and grey area going and know exactly how far they can push things. They dont get away with everything but revenue far outweighs the fines they get. Innovative and different they certainly are, i say good luck to them…
Say what you like about them, they have no vacancies at the moment

Polish unemployment rate currently about 8.5%. . . They`ll have no problem putting bums on seats yet.

Probably true ( the Spanish figures are higher) but why are the so many companies here who cannot get bums on the seats?
Is De Rooy maybe better than the likes of Stobart?
The other reason that De Rooy runs a lot of Polish and Slovakian drivers have as the do the transport for the Ford / Fiat factory in Tychy Poland and from the Kia / Hyundai production facility in Zilina Slovenia.
What wonders me the much is that hardly any south European drivers work in the U.K. As the unemployment rates are very high in Spain / Portugal.

The Southern Europeans choose to remain at home, hence the high unemployment figures. It’s so low in the eastern block as they have mostly traveled west to seek employment. You can only be counted in the figures if you’re actually there

Spain currently about 18% unemployed, Portugal a little lower, I think. As you say it`s high, and one sees many Spanish reg trailers with EE units, and some Spanish reg units with EE drivers.

1200 euros a month dole money for 2 years probably accounts for about 70% of the Spanish figures… not sure if PORTUGAL is the same ?
Also the problem here is that no spaniards want to be lorry drivers anymore, pretty much the same as in the U.K.?
It is common for Spanish firms to hire South American drivers, and the Portuguese use drivers from Brazil, Angola or Mozambique, former colonies .

Seems Spain pays unemployment benefit of between 400 and 1100 euros/month, max of 2 years if employed for 7 years previously?
Wages for truck drivers of 1000 to 1600 euros/month?
I daresay Andrew G can say if those figures seem accurate ■■
Ive seen many Spanish reg trailers pulled by EE units, and have been told many Sp reg units are double manned by EE drivers on EE, not Spanish, rates of pay. Dunno how accurate that all is, but there
s fewer Spanish speaking drivers around the restaurants nowadays it seems to me. Still some yes, but not as before.

Franglais,
Yes the dole money depends on you previous employment, but can be done with different jobs. So if you have worked for 8 firms in the last 7 years, you’ll get the full amounts of benefits. I know of several people who work for a couple of years, then get the “sack” have 6 months on the dole and then back to work.
Makes a mockery of the unemployment figures.
Good drivers are getting harder to find here, be it Spanish or EE or South American. No one seems to be interested in international driving anymore.
