Davies Int. Southampton. With photos (Part 1)

Good evening Steven. I CAN remember the first time we met you. It was on a Sunday, you were on for PJK first time round and were tasked with delivering over from the Island a 142 and fridge which JD had purchased. Think Sealink were running IOW service then and you brought it over to Pompy where JD, Gooj and a young me were waiting. Can only remember this as upon your return as a ‘Footie’ to Caulkheadville, it ran out of diesel in the BP Forecourt 1/2 mile out of the terminal. I can recall Gooj having to jack the cab and bleed it. Don’t think we kept the rig and was sold straight on to Paul Selway in the West Country. FYI, Rog started New Years Eve ‘95 - out on ‘Luv Boat’ to Syds with trays. I cadged a lift over with him, Think it was Tom O’ Connor that year. Don’t forget Dijon reunion this August, bring your Clacks and wallet and make sure it has a chain on it. - will get JD to scan it soon. LULT ■■

Ok John who is this driver?

Not someone second name Mathews? At a guess??

Your righton there pat you get a cuddley toy for that .This was taken in a cafe on the A4 we used to do two runs a day from ISR at fawley to the old aerodrome at Yatesbury near calne. I think we got £76 a load back then but derv was 72p a gallon how times have changed. Wealways stopped of here for a cup of tea and a piece of cake after tipping the second load and then go and reload for the next day, it was boring but i knew every pothole on that route. Last i heard of Stan he worked for searoute packing the rubber foe export, dont know if he is still about. regds john.

Regards Jimski

Hi I too would have said it was Winky’s Volvo didn’t he used to have a great big ballast weight he could put on the back so he could tow some screens/crushers or some kind of plant■■?

Regards Pat

mappo:
I have to correct you John on one thing…The name of the Cabmont driver who put the candles into the drink was
definitely a Scotsman and his name was Jimmy Carlin. I did,nt know he was ex BRS as Pat said but he was certainly
an ex Smith of Maddiston driver alongside his Uncle Pat Carlin…Fergie will confirm this.

Yep. it was indeed Jimmy…one of the luckiest blokes alive ( apart from your little tête-à -tête with a Glasgow bridge and tarmac Tone ) He was so ■■■■■■ he never knew what happened, which probably saved his life…
The whole story is worth telling, and if I get time one day, I’ll post it up…

Here we go then Reader as promised. Special 20th Anniversary Collectable. L-R: F725 RDF Driven by Martin Rouse (previously you), G602 ADD (The block of flats), driven by Ged, J11 LLD - Mr Kwozzy, G87 XBK - The special one (not Mourinho, but Mr Read), H660 CKM (It did get painted in the end - this was the first of three second hand sister trucks, the others being H658 + H659), driven by Peter ‘Sinatra’ Clue and finally on the end and in the picture, George (Zimmer) god bless him. I was with George on that trip so was not thankfully fully integrated in the ways of Davies, just partially!!. I’m sure all would agree from that date to present, a phrase was born which has stayed with the company forever: ‘Well I’m not ringing him!!’ - LULT ■■

hi pat and jim this was winkys in the end but was bought new by ted cresswell i think who came from Waltham chase i think. His brother robin used to do some relief driving for us when we were on Scac in the early 80s.

Hi shady here you talk about longos curry he was good at them he made one at our house with the left over turky one new year. he was good at it cos his dad was in the quartermasters store out in india he learnt of his old man.Mind when he made the one at home he drank 3ltrs of chilled frizzanti during the process.rgds. buzzer.

closest i got to your fleet was looking at it while i parked up in lorraines when i was on woolston freight, Andy Goves kept on saying i should wonder over and put my name down !!! should of done really but still managed to become great mates with a few of the drivers Axle, sling, nat, neil etc

Can remember Andy Goves had a couple of F10’s from us, plus the SDC Skellys. C872 UMS + C560 CWN. Both were orange cabs with black chassis and were on contract to Dual Carriage Ltd in the docks, hence the colours. We got them from Paul Stephens (F-T). Seem to remember the drivers came with them as well, a couple of lads called Richard and Geordie.

i had a F10 A594 NWR great truck then a e reg F10, was probably on R&A when he got them,on for PMP now so seem to have followed you down to Fareham
