Daily defects

I can see the points of some on here who say why check something which you parked up just 12 hours earlier, but all I ask is did you check is 12 hours earlier?

Yup. I do a full walk 'round in the evening, at the same time as checking I’m secured for the night (boxlock on etc). All up, the whole lot gets checked over at least 3 times a day, just not beyond the bare basics first thing. Bear in mind also that I don’t just park it up and leave it, I live in the wretched thing all week.

Just a foot note to all this, we just had the ministry in, the full nine yards and they want to see your , tacho in and not moving for about ten minutes to show that you have done the check, and also recorded it as other work! So, i guess they want it done in the morning, i think that the way we have been going about our job has changed, how many times lately have ya heaerd them say, are you a proffesional driver?.The objective is to get tpt co to raise there game, get rid of the bad ones and raise the attitude of the poor drivers, hence the drivers cpc, there will be no excuse for not knowing anymore., I dont reckon its a bad thing in the long run, but it will make it a lot harder to enter the proffesion in the first place

i drive a rigid so prob quicker for us and longer for you artic lads but it does not take me 10 mins to walk round and see what is/isnt hanging off/loose/missing or mended with cable ties :exclamation:  it prob takes me 5 mins unless i’m in a truck where you have to check the oil level manually by dropping a stone in it and count the time between the drop and the splash :exclamation: which we dont have many trucks that do as they all have electronic readouts.

does anybody ever spent 10 mins doing an mot…sorry… a walk roud on a normal rigid (i.e not a HIAB etc extra things to check etc)

it takes prob 10 mins to do walk round check then do my daily paper work, then pick my nose, scratch my arse check my stop watch oh dear still time…write a book…oh still time to waste lets get the chess board out…CHECKMATE ooh 10 mins on tacho lets go.

10 mins seems about right for a rigid if thorough checks are done - every wheel nut etc especially if markers are not fitted
A lot of drivers keep the same truck all week so certain checks may not need to be done daily.

with mention to the full inspection at 5am, it isn’t going to happen. The basic check consists of air in the tanks & tyres, that the fuel tank is still full and that all the lights glow. another quick check would be a cursory glance at the security seal or a plink plonk of the chains, straps or ropes.

Tyres are not going to go bald overnight, neither is the tax going to expire suddenly or the MOT certificate be a forgery. A sensible solution would be to keep an eye on things throughout the day. It hardly helps that the defect book proudly states no defects at 6.30 when you have just ripped an underrun bar off at Sainsburys after lunch
