Buckstones:
Turbine wheels are made from Inconel or similar Ni/Mo/Co alloys, much the same as the alloys used for the turbine blades in jet engines: these alloys are able to operate for long periods at red heat.
Oil flow through the turbo around the rotor shaft carries away heat so that it doesn’t soak all the way along to the compressor end. Insufficient oil flow leads to carbon build up and eventual failure.
So make compressor wheels out of the same stuff they make tubine wheels!
Or is that too simple?
The reason compressor wheels are made from aluminium or titanium is that these are lightweight materials, about one third as dense as turbine wheel materials.
The rotational inertia of the wheels and shaft is higher for heavy wheels, this means turbo lag is worse than for a lightweight rotating assembly. In some cases, for example some exotic sports cars, two small turbos are fitted instead of one large one. Total airflow will be the same but inertia and turbo lag on acceleration will be much less.

I hope this makes sense?
to everyone else, yes
to Burgerking, well, we all think he is skipping school, and not actually a mechanic at all
ShropsBri:
I would be intrested to know what your qualifications are BK,how long ago and what your doing now. To be honest, the only reason I ask is that there is a daf tech here and you say he’s wrong.
Why the attitude too? You are at the stage now where why I wonder why you’re here but then everytime you post you just show yourself up more and it is funny!
See I aint no daf “tech” I served my time from 16 to 21 at BRS I got C+g part 12+3 and technicians ticket/
But the real corker is I still get to listen to Daf,Scania,Merc and Volvo “master Technicians” and I find they know ■■■■ all.Bunch of knobs dont even know how to repair a tail lift ,a fridge a shutter, bunch of ■■■■■ amatuers that know jack ■■■■ but love to tell you how clever they are.
Went out to one ■■■■■■■ the other day (merc ace tech(( ■■■■■■■)) couldnt quite “figure” how to stop a QR valve leaking.mind you the cretin didnt know what a QR valve was!!!
But he did tell me he was a “master technician” but he was not quite sure how “trailer brakes” work.
EH?

Electric spooled blower ever heard of one?
I don’t understand why anyone is still arguing with Bking
I don’t know wether he has the qualifications he claims, I do know on the knowledge he has provided I wouldn’t have him any where near a truck I own.
Once someone has been as discredited as he has over many threads surely by know you must know not to feed him any more?
Bking - as for you mate, I would give up- no-one believes or has any faith in anything you say anymore, - you may get something right eventually but I suspect that will be more by luck than knowledge. Do yourself a favour and stop looking like a complete tool and stop posting unless you actually know what your talking about.

Because "bking " actually does the job instead of being some useless pontificating ■■■■ that has always sat behind a desk telling folk like me how to do my job.
Meanwhile these jerks get paid for doing ■■■■ all.
Time to get rid of these parasites.
I am about to have the Turbo changed for a titanium one on my 2011 460 XF, as it falls in the range of vehicles with suspect turbo’s. Has any one else on here had this done?, and if so did DAF do it free of charge as I have found an article on line stating that DAF have replaced 3000 turbo’s FOC in the UK due to this problem. My dealer has quoted me a special price of £800, which is a good price. However, I just wanted to know if it is correct that DAF have replaced some FOC. Thanks
FOC will probably be vehicles that where in warranty ,or had extended warranty …If you have no cover / warranty that is why there is a special price of £800 …Your best speaking with whoever is doing the job about labour which I would imagine you will pay

Thanks Norb, but this price was quoted by the service manager so includes the labour element!! I am just waiting for them to get the turbo in.
