So if he want’s to drive bus for live, he need to pass his license again, even if he drove it for last 10 years? That’s strange.
If he has been driving D1Es (minibuses) for 10 years without being under one of the exemptions then he has been driving it illegally
To make a definition on this chap then I would need to know if he has a PCV licence or not and if not, the exact contract he is on and who with as I could then determine whether he has, or is likely to have one of the exemptions.
No it was only example. Let say that it wasn’t driving for money, but he just have 3 wives and 13 kids

orys, if he had been driving illegally, then with 3 wives & 13 kids, I think the judge would have took pity on him and said that he had suffered enough
If the man is driving his 3 wives and 13 kids there is no money changing hands therefore non vocational.Where council minibuses the passengers are not paying in any way shape or form so not really for hire and reward. What about the local friendly ■■■■■■ who live in old double deckers I am sure that they have a D licence seatbelts tax and insuranceas well as an mot.
Smart Mart:
There isn’t room on the licence for all groups so sometimes a group is not put on if there is one which is a ‘higher’ one - there is a C1E which covers C1 as well. I don’t hace C1 on mine, but i do have C CE and C1E.
That sounds like a typical DVLA ■■■■ up type of thing.
You can take a D1 test to get the 101 restriction removed can’t you? Although seeing as it costs nearly as much as D there isn’t a lot of point.

Just to had to the confusion and general mayhem, you can drive any bus on your existing Cplus E ticket ,but in a voluntary capacity. That means no wages ,non vocational.I bet that the bods who dream this stuff up are on a better salary than most of us.
Can anyone point me to something official on this please - got a wild, pie in the sky, idea of buying an old coach/bus to convert into a motorhome so if my existing C+E licence will cover me then it’s one less hurdle to worry about…

A CE gives you no entitlement to drive a coach / bus however if you convert it to a motorhome I think your C covers you.
I passed my car test in Jan 98 so missed out on minibus, 7.5 tonner etc. Strangely when I passed my automatic D, I could not drive a 16 seater ie transit minibus even though I was covered for a manual transit on my car licence and I had automatic full D. I later sat a full manual D, the examiner couldnt get her head around the fact I needed to upgrade from auto to manual, and why I even had auto in the first place. At this point I should have sat my C as it would have upgraded my D to manual… DOH. Never mind, Passed 5 driving tests first time so am I allowed a big head?
Yes the DVLA do occasionally mess up, after passing my C+E they never put my D+E on which is automatically upgraded. When I sent it back all the categories were correct apart from C1+E was present but C1 was on my provisional entitlement!!! Obv C1+E overrides this so not bothered!
All good fun, so at least now have the full lot bar some of the minor categories and motorbikes.

Ive always thought that a double decker would be a briliant motor home - bedrooms and bathroom upstairs and kitchen, dining/living room downstairs
Dont think the neighbours would like a double parked outside, wait a minute Ive done that got the tee shirt, got some funny looks when I brought a double decker home a few monthes back

you can have any private vehicle you want and to drive it on the public highway you must have the relevant current licence for the WEIGHT of the vehicle and a +E if it is pulling a trailer of a certain size.
If the vehicle is over 3.5 tonnes and under 7.5 tonnes then a C1 licence is required.
If the vehicle is over 7.5 tonnes then a C licence is required
I’ve just confirmed this with DVLA - 01792 278 341
So getting an old double decker coach converted into a motorhome, as described above, as long as it only had 8 passenger seats and the registration document was amended accordingly could be driven by someone on a C licence? Groovy.

Spot on if the weight is over 7.5 tonnes - what would the ACTUAL weight be, I wonder…
Even if the weight is under 7.5 you can still drive it on C
Seriously for one of the big 3 axle tour bus jobs say the weight of fitments etc is = to a full load of pass and luggage probably somewhere around the 26t mark. Sound reasonable?

It would need to be converted though, I’m not 100% convinced a coach with the full amount of seats can be driven on a C just because it’s private use.

As they are now, a double decker bus weighs 10.5t empty for a Volvo Olympian, 11.6t for a low floor Dennis Trident, not sure for a Leyland Olympian think its about 10.5t as well…

is that for the 6 wheeler ones? what would the mam for it be? I came up with my answer cause its got three axles so surely going to be more than 18t?

You are correct as the seating must be less than 9 - if not then it comes under D licence regs.
That was the one question DVLA asked me - “Are all but 8 seats being removed?”

No, bog standard 2 axle buses…
Anyway, for every 15 passengers you can add a ton to the empty, and a double decker can carry 90 people…
