Cyclist Killed By Mixer in Oxford

mrx:
i’ll say it : what the [zb] was a 74 year old doing driving a commersial vercal?

why not?
my grandad would have been driving well beyond 74 if he hadn’t fell off a ladder and died.

What is a “block reverse?” does he mean reversing around a corner? Because that is done every day by many vehicles - if it becomes a dangerous manoeuvre within the law we are all screwed…
And where the ■■■■ am I supposed to find a Banksman when I have to turn my vehicle on the public highway? Do I carry a midget in my side locker?
Condolences to all concerned, and I’m worried you could be right, Muckaway, a jail sentence could well be the end of a 74 year old…

Harry I usually enjoy reading your post, but in this case I think your comments are sick. A young women has lost her life, children may have lost their mother. I think you should remove your comments from this open forum

Condolences to the victims family, ban all JUGGERNAUTS! I hope the driver gets a shift when he’s 81 and he gets out of prison for such a henious crime! :grimacing: :grimacing:

AMSTERDAM is pretty good for flattening cyclists :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

Just because YOU are offended you want comments removed? Why does your opinion count more than anyone else’s, exactly? As you point out, this is an open forum - deal with it…

I think if this man goes to prison than will just add to the tragedy.
Even the prosecution state the witness statements are inconsistent, as to whether he hit the woman whilst reversing.
The “experts” say they can’t work out exactly what happened, the prosecution states that the manoeuvre appears to be dangerous, but he Judge still wants experts advice on that subject.

And what would a prison sentence achieve?

absolutly nothing.

Exactly I feel for the guy too as it was a accident now his proberly going to die in prison

He was in a yard could of got someone to see him out … an innocent person has lost their life due to him … cement covering camera obviously didnt do his checks. all crap in cab prob restricting view … Jail wont kill him they will just think he is a ■■■■■■■■■■ at that age … will get away with it though should of asked for a banksman

Why is it building sites etc have banksmen and yet when you do food delivieries for instance there is no banksman?People need to take more responsibility for their own actions.

Have “banksmen” at some of the stores we deliver to if they stay any time after being trained/instructed. Most are as much use as an ashtray on a motor bike, either minimal bending at the wrists, arms flailing like a windmill in a hurricane or blind positioning. In one location it was a 2 banksmen to get out requirement until one was nearly flattened now it’s “your on your own drive”.

The signs that are put up “No reversing without Banksman” are usually put up for lip service only, with only a few exceptions that actually have trained banksmen. If I need watching out I find someone and tell them don’t bother trying to wave your arms about, stay well clear and in view of my mirrors and shout if I’m going to hit something.

Having said this, in this case although near a site, the driver looked like he was doing the manoeuvre entirely on a public road, whatever the exact circumstances in this accident (and I’m not privy to that), some responsibility must lie with anyone who approaches a truck carrying out a manoeuvre (usually with reverse lights, 4 ways and bleepers going) and doesn’t give them the room or time to carry out that manoeuvre safely. How many times have we had to reverse round a corner or into a delivery and you get all and sundry trying every which way to get round even when you take up the whole road?

Very sad case for all involved.

It is indeed a very sad case. That particular road where the accident took place is very confusing to all concerned. There is a bus lane which also causes extra confusion.I once saw a young Asian lady driving along the bus lane the wrong way.Possibly a student.
Generally Oxford is a place where a lot of cyclists just do as they please, although i am not saying the unfortunate lady who died was doing anything errant.
Going back to the issue of banksman how often do Brakes/3663 have a banksman?

Once I had a drivers mate who had no banksman training on my first run with 3663.

But left to my own devices after that

How was she innocent, she fell off her bike before he hit her according to several witnesses.

Maybe that was caused by panic, maybe because her bike wasn’t maintained.

I missed the bit saying he had missed his checks and the camera was useless.

A very good lady friend of mine was killed in greenwich about 3 yrs ago, she was the life and soul of any party and a sad loss. She was a very experienced bike rider, and the cause was the truck driver.
It is sad whenever anyone loses their life in tragic circumstances, especially when it may have been avoided.
As stated, their was clutter in the windscreen ( apparently not the cause, but cluttered none the less )
The reversing camera was covered in cement, and although i feel for the old boy, i think with proper care, it could have been avoided, if it was found that he was to blame, then he deserves all he gets, as do all the other morons convicted of dangerous driving, regardless of age and experience. R.I.P. and condolences to the family.

Your personal experience should not cloud your judgement of this case.

You (or I) don’t know the full facts of this case and your arguments are illogical.

Crap in the windscreen is immaterial when reversing.

And I can reverse safely without the use of a reversing camera. It’s called looking in your mirrors or out the window.

HTH

He wasn’t in a yard, it was a pump job and the pump was facing the opposite way to the mixer. Pump driver told him to turn around, whic he did. The accident happened at some point between reversing in and driving out of the side road. Cemex staff told me he was going forwards when a pedestrian shouted to him, and checking mirrors saw the woman between the back wheels. Cemex accident report said police noted dirty camera and clutter in cab. Some of this clutter I understand was a brush and shovel stowed in the passenger footwell. Reference was also made to the dirty interior, wtf has that got to do with it?

Since when has having a working camera been part of the ‘mot’ ?

Concrete plants must be some of the dirtiest holes to work in, the plant operators never sort ‘filthy’ plants out just moan @ the OD’s to keep their trucks clean

A sad end to a long driving career. I think jailing him would’ve killed him to be honest.
Regarding people in the Oxford Mails’ comments on the drivers’ age, I bet they’dve shouted just as much if it had been a young driver. As I’ve posted before, I know that this driver knows mixers inside out, It could happen to anyone of us.
