Sorry guys but Sobarts have more lorries then all of the other ■■■■■■■■ hauliers but together.

so what !!

hi bewick when you did you go from bradys to start up by your self just thinking you may of know my dad his names was don pugh

Bewick:
Nice shot of the “new” Brady depot at the top of Duke st. in Barrow probably shot in the early 70’s. When I worked for Brady’s in the mid 60’s I used to park my " newish" Austin Se7en in fron’t of the righthand side window of the office, behind where the phone is. My mini was never “touched” during the time I was there and it sometimes stood for a week at a time. The two Brady Bros. Aunt Bessie kept an eye on it for me !!! it was who you knew in Barrow in those days not what you knew, wink, wink, say no more. Cheers Bewick.

Sorry kev I don’t re-call that name, there were drivers starting and leaving all the time and the Octopus I was on always seemed to operate on it’s own seams of regular traffic and we didn’t have a lot of contact with the artics.Names I can readily re-call are, Dennis Lancaster,Nobby Clark, Albert Coward Ronnie Ashburner,■■■■ Pennings,Freddy Richardson,Jackson Tyson,Ronnie Lomas,Tommy Benson,Brian Sharp,Tom Sharp,Roy Davies ( later a Bewick driver), Frank Sleddon, Willie Dixon,John Cornthwaite,Kenny Armstrong,Bill Croskell ( later a Bewick driver) and other names I can no longer remember, But the last but by no means least was the Great Eric Postlethwaite who I worked with on the waggon and trailer !!Cheers Bewick.

hi hodgeturbo , i believe the "contraption " was a spanish dodge running gear with a ■■■■■■■ engine and a dennison cab . all tyson’s own work ! i remember seeing it about . if i’m wrong someone will put it right , cheers , dave

I would agree with you,Dave, all Tysons own work, something ESL wouldnt of known how to do, also it runs in my mind that some years ago it was rumoured that ESL was trying to open a depot on the Tyne Tunnel Trading Est,it never happened I wonder why EH. regards Larry

i was told by a chap from cleator moor (finlayson) who bought edmund crows works (ecrolite bodies) that he was approached by tysons as they had some dodges that had belonged to rootes from new, but while he was using them they suffered from tin worm, so he was told to take all the “good” bits and make a cab to suit driver and operator, so although mainly a dodge come dennison(sisu) its a proper bitsa,
heres a couple for cg, there not tippers or stobbys but they are ■■■■■■■■

Any one know where its at,the last time i had a crown lockup van on like this one it was loaded with whisky!!!

Hello everyone,
Thanks yungnad for those interesting photos, but who’s I & VJ Fisher■■? I’ve have never seen any of their lorries about. Are they a TB Subbie■■?
Eddie Stobart fan, Yes your right about Stobarts Fleet (I would have to agree because I am a spotter), but when Stobart’s had there Bedford TK flatbeds and ERF’s up at Caldbeck, Browns, Brady’s, Bewick Transport, Robson’s and many more where in there prime time. Stobart’s only started to get big after the move to Carlisle in 1976 and the move to Kingstown, which saw them get the MB transport & warehousing contract from Robsons, who wouldn’t invest in drawbars or new warehousing, beacuse at that time, they where under UG management.
Long Live Stobarts, a True ■■■■■■■■ Haulier!

Hello Bewick,
Thanks for that comment. Well, even if your a Stobart Spotter like me, you’ve still got to know about other hauliers (especially ■■■■■■■■■■

That could be CG driving it ! of course, thats the connection, but I bet he only runs betwwen Aspatria and Carlisle. In that shot he’s probably just giving it a whizz on the M6 between the Carlisle north and south Junctions !!! Cheers Dennis.

Hi lads,
A couple more of Pickthalls Cleator Moor, the last ERF tractor unit Howard Pickthall bought new.

Hello Bewick,
I posted a Mercedies because it’s one of your old wagons. Thanks for your photo though.
That was a very funny comment about the Stobart wagon and me.
Thanks again

You could have chosen a better motor than that old Mrec CG,it was one that came in a two tractor, two trailer little European firm I bought out in 1990 and that tractor was lucky not to have got the “chop”,however we decided to re-paint it and it was used to ferry un-accompanied trailers to and from the ferry ports we used. It turned out to be reliable all the same. Cheers Bewick.

Hi Everyone,
I have posted a drawing I did a few years ago of a Donnan Scania 141 on the Sugar Tongue at Whitehaven. Some of you might have seen it already but ,to those who haven’t,I hope you all like it

I remember going down to Whitehaven and watching the trawlers landing their catch and the lorries loading off the quayside. Donnans always ran a nice fleet, all the units being named after their trawlers. There seems to be very few photos about of their lorries but I have tried to capture as much detail as I can in the drawing.
If anyone has any photos of the Donnan fleet of lorries I would love to see them for possible future drawings.
Another big Whitehaven Fish merchant was Thomas W Dixon. I distinctly remember a flatbed leyland 6 wheeler of theirs - k reg. I am sure they used to load fish directly onto the flatbed and cover it with ice although I could be wrong - perhaps you lads could confirm this - just to satisfy my memory!
I also remember Donnans having a little Karrier Bantam that would be down on the quayside.

I grew up in Egremont- opposite Henry Grahams garage on the Main A595. We saw ALL the local firms passing our road end every day. Building at Sellafield was booming and the tippers and mixers passed all day long;
Eskett quarries
Watsons of Arlecdon
DA Harrison etc etc
We knew them all!
I drive a Scania R620 now for a Northern Ireland company now. I always knew I would end up behind the wheel!
Brilliant thread this by the way!
