Not sure we can knock Workington - not saying you were Bewick.

Been there twice in the past 12 months. Parking is disc with (I think) half hour spaces in the centre. There are no empty shops and although they have the inevitable charity shops there are lots of local traders.

Here in Barrow, we charge a fortune for parking over 10 minutes and there are loads of empty shops. I have had several tickets just going to the bank.

The town that had its parking meters vandalised, with the shops showing an upturn in trade of nearly 50%, it’s not rocket science is it!

John.

I suppose I’m kinda well behind the times Paul,I was paying Bruce Cook’s man £2 a ton in the early 90’s it was great stuff for spreading on the yard and I always had 100ton or so on the stock pile they used to usually tip it during the night off the M6.Cheers Dennis.

Will there be a similar run this year? The route you have described is a fantastic one, the view from Hartside Cafe is a amazing.

Talking about Alston, makes me reminisce about J H Henderson & Sons, a fleet of green ERF’s based in Alston. How they coped on the A689 is beyond me. J H Henderson & Sons also owned a garage in Alston, not too sure if they are still in business.

Hendersons motors very rarely ran up to Alston, they were based at Langwathby near Penrith and that side of the firm was managed by Tony Henderson the son of Bob who was a son of the founder J.H…Yes they did have a Garage business in Alston to-gether with a Rootes dealership and I believe this part of the operation was managed by Tony’s cousin. Tony’s brother Malcolm was a Police constable in Kendal during the 60’s and 70’s.They were a great old fashioned firm of many years standing, the last I heard of Tony was that he was running a Limo fleet from Langwathby but I’m not too sure about the Alston end. Cheers Bewick.

Caught on my dash camera driving to Carlisle on the A 595 yesterday I met this DAF belonging to J. Sharp of Silecroft with a specialist furniture removing container fitted complete with dropped loading tailboard. I think it would probably have been built by Edmund Crow, bodybuilders of Cleator Moor. My mate Norman Dowell had an almost identical designed body built on a BMC but direct onto the chassis. This container has been in use regularly since the early 1960s certainly to my knowledge spending most of its life on the back of a Bedford TK. Sharpes also ran with cattle containers on, swap bodies are nothing new. I dont think this container has ever been repainted as long as I have known it.

Another cracking photo I never realised that J Sharp are still in business, this demountable is probably interchangable with livestock carriers. At one time they ran milk tankers with drawbar trailers.
