Lovely pics of Paul Sapiano he was a typical east end boy and a great
character with a rich sounding Italien name which would not of been
out of place in Hollywood, he was as hard as nails and a little bit of a
loose cannon as well. one week i was going home on the Saturday round
the Ho Chi Minh and i got to that village just before the end where you had
a routiers on the right just before the level crossing, and Paul was parked
on the side of the road with his cab up he had a F10/12 not sure which
so i pulled up to see if i could help Paul informed me he had blown a head
gasket but had a spare gasket and could repair it, i said ok i will stay and
help you. well it was a pig of a job as you have to drop the manifolds
on both sides of the block and also we had no torque wrench well this
was about 1pm and the road was quite busy and Paul was losing his
temper and throwing spanners about which were bouncing of cars
going past and i expected the Gendarmiere to arrive at any minute.
then we needed the torque wrench to tighten the head bolts down so
i dropped my trailer and went to that guy up the road who sold and
repaired mini tractors and lawn mowers and after a bit of haggling got
the loan of a torque wrench so we got the job finished and filled the motor
up with water and fired the old girl up after about ten minutes we decided
all was ok so i said to Paul you get going i will take the wrench back and
will catch you up, well he only got about a mile and the motor was boiling up
again so he parked it up by the station there and came home with me and
he went back the next week to sort the motor out ,we had been there about
six hours we was black as the ace of spades tired and hungry but that would
not happen nowadays as you all know, but i can still see those spanners
bouncing of the passing cars and hear Paul raging like a bull its those days
when you look back that made you glad you did the job and made so many
good buddies in the process
dreva:
Just echoeing what Dreva wrote will never get bored of reading the stories and pictures you guys are posting .You probably could write a book about those times over the water. Please keep it going!!
i was running up and down to italy full time in those days as well.
i recognise some of the faces, but never knew the names.
i think most of us that did this job,
if we knew then what we know now.
we could have written books about it.
bob i woke you up on the way to get this

Good pics Lenny. Do you happen to know the reg of the Scania in red with Unitruc on the headboard and Service Garage on the doors? Reason is a good friend of mine, and yours reckons it’s one thing, when i mentioned the number he told me to Richard (Unitruc) he said he was talking out of his backside!!! ( I will PM you our mutal friends name, I still do work for Uni’s, know Richard, but also know the lads at the garage. Know of you, in fact years ago you gave me some pics of the F16 when she was new, and an old Scania of SG when i met you at the Southend festival of transport, when i was an impressionable young truck spotter!!)
Dont worry either, nothing sinister in my question, when i get a minute i will PM you the reason, as i did to Crack ON, and Bob, i haven’t forgotten to ring you, just a lack of time, i will soon.
Incidentally, last week i was in Patras catching the ferry to Ancona, first time there for me, interesting to see your pics, can safely say the ships have changed a bit!!

No prob mate phone me any time, well that ferry sure is much improved
but do the same ferries go to Brindisi i would not be surprised if my old
Victory is still making that crossing.
I started working for Don Collison in 1990 6 months after passing my test I was 21.5 years old.
On the Monday that I started Don did not have a motor for me to drive so we got in his car went down to Scantrucks.
After about an hour Don came out of Keiths office with the keys to a 3 year old 113 6x2.
Unfortunately I do not have any photo’s of that truck however, I have some photo’s of the 2 other trucks that I drove for him and they were an E reg 112 6x2 & a J reg 113 4x2 centurion (No.66).
Me & Colin Shaw parked at the Shell Services at St Omer 1992
