Hi Chris, as Paul mentioned on his cracking North West Companies thread British Vita took over Nobels whose Northern Depot was in Ashton so as Wheelnut mentioned the Hyde area I though that I would repost this photo from Stansfield.

Regards Steve.

Sorry if i upset any of the North South divide. I know the lovers of Cheetham Hill are not as friendly with the people of Marple, but to a Yorkshireman, Manchester is just a big area of Lancashire that covers all the dark satanic mills :stuck_out_tongue:

Aye I know we had some dark satanic mills too, but we had more black faces then, think most of em moved to Burnley and Bury. I did correct the Makerfield bit, cos it was just coming up as Ashton in Google search

Thomas Cromptons - Ashton in Makerfield.
This must have been the forerunner of the company I collected hinges from in the late 70’s on Gerrard St, Ashton in Makerfield. Known then as “GKN Crompton’s” they were still faithfull to Bedford’s then, using 8 tonner TK’s and a little TK artic, but 16 tonner Commer Commando’s had taken the place of the Leyland’s.
I’ve just tried to Google map their works and found it’s been replaced by a shopping centre. :open_mouth:

Apparently Wigan’s claim to fame was lock and hinge manufacturing. I thought it was pies, beans and casinos.

GKN Crompton was on Gerard Street which opened in 1976 & was demolished in the early 90’s to make way for a shopping centre called The Gerard Centre.

Remember the boxes of screws in your dads shed?

Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds = GKN, it turned into a huge diversified operation!

Is Wigan, North Manchester enough?
