Age plays a part as well. As you get older the less inclined you are to want to comute big distance. Or even go at all. Haha

Hi, as a recently passed (Class 2) driver, I’d like some advice about commute times.Early days, but not having much luck finding a decent job in the S Wales area. But there’s plentiful jobs in the Bristol/Avonmouth area (50 min drive each way). Got a call from an agency in the Bristol area, turned them down. Now having second thoughts.
Question: In your opinion/experience, do you think a daily 100 min commute + a Class 2 multidrop work is sustainable for 2 years? (After 2 years, I hope to move up to Class 1, hopefully)
Thank you
EDIT: What would your maximum be for daily work? 30 mins each way?
I live in neath and tramp, I travel to Cardiff on a Monday and return on Friday and it doesn’t bother me, used to travel to Newport and avonmonth before so Cardiff is easy, but your right the work in South Wales is ok but need to travel for the bucks

Not everyone`s choice, but some buy a camper-van or similar and stop in that for a few days. Not much different to being in a truck cab, except having more space, better facilities, and the ability to drive if you want. Certainly worth a thought?
I have worked in several places over the years where there was a camper or two parked up in a far-distant corner. You need a cooperative boss though - 1. to allow you to park up in the first place, and 2. to give you long shifts while you are working to maximise your paid hours and your weekend hours.
If it’s agency, you can give it a go and see how you get on, but I really wouldn’t fancy that drive home after a long day in the cab. When I was an agency driver, I had a [theoretical] 30-minute max, but there is plenty of work where I live so they rarely wanted me to go any further. If I did, it was as a favour, and they paid me an extra hour to cover the fuel cost.

If the boss isn`t co-operative, you could always drive the camper to a messy lay-by elsewhere, for the full UK tramper experience!
Odd days:

Nail hit well and truly on head!

Tried a 50 mile commute for a week on day work for about a week, it was too much especially if you only got a 9hr off. If you after experience it may be worthwhile but with the usual long shifts of lorry driving, you won’t get enough rest.
Used to do 90 miles each way but was out all week so didn’t mind. Now my truck has been moved closer to me it’s only 20 miles each way so I get an extra hour in bed on a Monday morning.

theres always the option of maximising your income by sub letting the van when your away working, especially if you find a handy night trunk??

Customers of your Van Transfusion or TransformVan service, or whatever you do on the side?
Better they are your customers than t`other way around!
There are some firms like Stobarts who actually advertise that “persons more than 45 minutes drive away - need not apply. This is not a Tramping position.”
I commute 30 minutes each way for trunking, if the pay wasn’t as good as it is then the distance would be shorter.
I know trampers who’ve travelled 100 miles for their job, as its only 200 miles a week

1 gallon of 4* each way. So anything over 20miles is out of the question…
That dates us - four star petrol hasn’t been sold here for 20 years (where the ■■■■ did that time go!?)

You’re not trying! P6 owners generally reckon to get around 16-20 mpg on ordinary running around, only getting into the low/mid 20s on longer, steady runs. I know that back in the day I had a Marina 1.8TC (also with twin SU’s) that never ever did better than 28mpg (and often did a lot less…).
