Clubs and Dances, Pubs, were truckers delight

There are so manny places come to mind… eerrrr gettin on now lol when i got yorks delivs i always made for Hull to park only 3.50 with toilets and a guard cant remember the name now was by the salvesen depot… was manny pubs and chippys within walkin distance great nites there i remember the guy on the gate you paid 3.50 and he gave you a ticket saying 5.00  for the boss  manny a good nite there. Its funny to think back now but when i was on multidrops back then you used to just stumble upon some good parking places(some bad too) so to manny to list!!!. Portland road Ipswich next to the footy ground was a nother good one.The cattle market at Bridgwater was a good un too the chineese just next to the waterin hole . Sorry cant remember the pub names… never took much notice… Hic

Hodgy67 yes I forgot Bridgewater, also therewas that transport cafe on the outskirts, at this moment the name is on the tip of my tongue, and a good night at my stamping ground in the REME Norton manor camp Taunton, Exeter, keep it up lads, your not as old as you feel. Sandman Norman

The cafe may have been Grahams, does that ring a bell Norman? just outside on the Taunton Road, It’s changed names a few times over the years. Good place to park up good grub pub just up the road.

cheers

John.

Just had a think about that Norman, as I said it’s changed names a few times over the years and not sure how far your going back, I think it was called Woods Cafe before it changed to Grahams.

cheers

John.

Tranent, just before get to Edingburgh, was a place the truckers used to go to dances at the working mens club, the mecca at Hull, and Darlington on a friday night, Gretna Green, you would always see lorries parked up. Sandman Norman

Someone who I worked with was caught out over his secret life in Musselburgh. You would never expect the 2 women to meet, they did and all hell broke loose

Pontefract was a great night out, I used to park there in the late 90’s but got put off after having my curtains slashed again and again.

I remember walking up the town with another Southampton driver (Alan from BKG) and he took me in a bar for a beer, I thought the barmaid was a little underdressed but when she moved away from the beer pumps I spotted she was ■■■■■■■. this was the first ■■■■■■■ bar I had been in in the UK and was shocked to find it in Ponty.

a nice town with some good pubs.

Doncaster was also a good night out but you had to hang a ‘no thanks’ note in the cab window to stop the prossies knocking until the early hours.

Gretna at the Halcross dog stadium on the annan road was a good stop. I think the lady’s name was Barbara who would come in and cook for the drivers and the owner/barman was Jimmy. On a tuesday it would be full of dog trainers. Aberdeen at Lauries truckstop, nice barmaids and more shapely than the one at 'Jacks Hill cafe (Towcester) who had bigger forearms than me.

Yeah I can remember that big old bird at Jacks Hill, you could have put a couple of chains around her neck and put her on heavy recovery, she’d have pulled an artic in    There used to be a pub in Chesterfield did ■■■■■■■ on a thursday night a few years ago, it then got to a bit more than ■■■■■■■ and got closed down.

There was, poss still is a truckstop just outside of immingham docks.

Used to have some acts on there, nothing pervy, usually just singers or comedy acts, remember one girl, looked really nice, and what a voice, had the place spellbound, did all sorts of songs, from Karen Carpenter, to Suzi Quattro…

Been to some of the seedier ones too

Yes john, I remember it both names, the food was good, some parts of the park was alittle rough, he always had more on the ticket, than he charged, coddy I was in immingham in the early and late 60’s I was working on the cranes building fison’s fertiliser factory, but I cannot remember where I enjoyed myself, I must have done, I did everywhere else. Sandman Norman

Here is a few more I hada good time Halifax, Bradford, Dewsbury, Newcastle under lyme, oh and Great Yarmouth, used to park where the coaches did , on the front, just below Wellington pier, then into a cafe just past the Carlton hotel, then after the pubs, used to go to a club, that was about half way between the two piers upstairs, facing the sea, it used to have " Country and Western", lot of Jim Reeve’s about in those days. Batley club, Eartha Kitt, I would not liked to be scratched by her, Meow. Sandman Norman

bamber bridge near preston used to be agood night out anyone ever park up their on the ind est.

Norman Ingram:
Was the latter down in Southampton?

Sorry Norman, yes it was. I used to get my fair share of weekends down in Fawley Refinery and a few of us would grab a taxi or a tractor unit to the big lights on a Friday or Saturday night

W/N I thought it was, I remember going in to it a couple of times, bamberbridge, used to do a change over in a haulage yard in the late 80’s on the ind. estate, stopped there twice in earlier years, but only went to a pub, most likely the wrong nights. Morecombe, we would park up on the market square, and go in digs, start in the pubs, and end up on the pier, where the dance would be. Here is a tale to laugh at. me and a few of the mermaid squadron, was in this pub, drinking a pint of our lager, not the river nene one or the special brew, the one in between, anyway I was chatting and drinking, and this chap came up to the bar, and pushed in, and spilt my drink, I just said whatch it mate, and he replied, " Do you want your face improving “, I turned, and saw this nearly seven foot tall, and almost half of that wide, I looked up, and put on my angry face, and said " Yes please”, he replied no I will let you suffer with the one you have, and buy you another pint. Sandman Norman

hey steve(mushroomman)you forgot the giggling sausage at willoughby there was always at least 10 blue dart there

Hello Gerry  , I have not heard from you for a long time. I think you are going back to mid 70’s ? wasn’t it.
Was it not called The Sleepy Sausage and was owned by a bloke called Paul, I.I.R.C. the digs were across the road in a house. I only stayed there a couple of times but I can remember that pub in the village which looked more like a house and the beer came straight from a barrel with a brass tap knocked into it. Ken Singleton ( R.I.P.) and Dave Shawcross used to stay there a lot when they were on B.R.S.
I bet that you have been in The Candlelight in Oldham on a couple of occasions and I am sure you will remember parking on Valence Road near Whitechapel when there would be at least six drivers sleeping in the back of a van. After a wash in the Salvation Army Doss House on Whitechapel Road and a pint in The Blind Begger we would make our way over to New Cross to The Montague Arms to see Jimmy Jones the comedian.
OH and what about going to see the exotic Swedish stripper in The Red Lion on Aldgate. Swedish my backside, she used to swear with a very strong Cockney accent. In fact the only connection she probably had with Sweden was lying on the bunk of a Volvo F88  .

Regards Steve.

Steve & gerry, he ended up with 7/8 places, one at Findon near Wellingbourogh was full of lorries, another on the A5 near Pottersbury, that is still open, went in there to have a breakfast in Febuary, when taking the wife to Saxon clinic at milton keynes, he still has the three in Northampton. Cattle market was a favourite place to park, also old Towcester rd, when the Salon de dance dance hall was going, next to Franklin gardens pub and " Saints" rugby ground. Birmingham The Bull ring was another place, the truckers like to go to the mecca. Sandman Norman

Hi Norman, I think that the lorry park in the center of Birmingham was called Saint Mary’s Road , it was underneath a flyover and a couple of minutes walk to the Bull Ring. There was a cafe just around the corner and a pub called The Railway which was owned for a long time by a big Irishman called Ray. He had about three daughters who worked in the pub and they would make a sandwich for any driver who came in late, there was always a lock in. They always made them on thick toasting bread for some reason with cheese or corned beef, one was always enough.
The nearest washing facilities were at The Public Baths not too far away and I think that the pulling place for a time was The Dolca Vita, hopefully Gerry or Rocky 7 will know  .

Regards Steve.

I remember the lorry park in Paisley, went in there a few times, never pulled though, the back end of my trailer looked better than any of the birds in there :open_mouth:

Another place was Charlie Chans nightclub, it was underneath Walthamstow dog track, plenty of room to park a lorry & a proper good night out, some of the birds looked like they had come down on the Paisley trunk though

There was a pub down the road from Christian Salvesens in Hull that was always full of drivers, I went in there a few times, got breakfast too a couple of times, wink wink, mind you I was younger & lighter in those days, now I’d even have to pay for it in Paisley :open_mouth:

I have mentioned the pub near Greenhithe or Northfleet where the barmaid would get her chest out for a pound. The amount of tanker drivers and Glendinning car transporter drivers in that little riverside pub should have made the Guinness book of small miracles :stuck_out_tongue:
[/quote]
For a pound eh, you must have been going to the posh pubs  There were a few lively spots around Leith Docks.
Of course there was always Jennifer who travelled the A6 around Carisle, going rate 2 bob. regards Big Al
