Class 2 first job

Have you tried sending your CV to companies that have a transport department? Try expanding the radius of the searches as the may get you work local to you? My first driving job was with an agency based in Cambridge and i worked in Northampton.

Good evening everyone,

Thank you so much for the advices and comments, but unfortunately i have no updates.
Hermes - yes they called me and gave me the link to register, saying what is the job and pay etc etc and silence?
I am almost everyday on the road googling and driving to every company big or small, speaking to managers, sending emails, phoning after few days and … nothing.
i have increased my radius to 2h drive from tn37 and … nothing :frowning:
i have spend £215 with CV library (online job agency), who’s confident to redo my CV in professional way and guarantee interviews within 2 days of sending application and… yes, nothing.

Is it just my luck?? Honestly, i am at the point of quitting. I know, i have done all i could and have no idea where to go from here.
Yes, covid and lockdowns, yet i see so many trucks on the road like there’s no lockdown?

Could be that this time of year is a low time for driver jobs
Usually picks up nearer to Easter

Keep yourself going doing any driving you can get, whether it be van or 7.5 tonne and it doesn’t need to be a full-time permanent job when you are getting experience.

It sounds like you are going direct to companies, which is admirable but perhaps a relative long-shot with no experience. You can still do all that, but keep working in the meantime.

You seem unfamiliar with driving agencies. A certain percentage of driving work is undertaken through agencies, where drivers go in to either one or many clients essentially on a day by day basis, although temporary ongoing positions come up. You are employed by the agency and paid by the agency. There are several national agencies that specialise in driving and logistics and others that cover a wider workforce as well. There are also more local agencies that deal mainly in a specific area.

If you build up a reputation driving 7.5 tonne without incidents, you will get class 2 work. Don’t get too hung up on driving to maximum entitlement.

Good day Gentleman,

First of all, my deepest apologies for yesterday’s rant. As embarrassing this will sound, i had my glass of wine and had to vent somewhere.
Thank you for the advices and i will keep looking. Yes, maybe it’s just a bad timing. I am registered with 14 agencies (both national and local ones).
Again apologies for yesterday

Adrian

Good day everybody,

Finally, some informative update.
Had a call from an agency about a job, which requires class 2 driver.
Unfortunately, it is not driving as such, as apparently no company will allow me behind the wheel straight away. It is work for council, in waste collection. I will start as a person who picks up the bin bags etc and over time i’ll drive. At first, i wasn’t sure if this is how i wanted to start, as at the end of the day i paid £2k for licence and now i will collect the rubbish, but on the other hand i thought, better this than sitting at home on furlough.
I also, know i should not be picky when it comes to very first job leading to my ultimate goal.
I would appreciate your insight on this guys.

My regards
Adrian

I have done a bit of bin lorries and the job description was as a driver / loader. I had to accept being sent out as a loader on occasion and also being spare sitting in the canteen for hours at times too. It just depends the way you look at things. I was always paid as a driver and the majority of the time I was driving.

I suppose it does make sense for the operation to run with more drivers than necessary to cover for when people call in sick.

Bit of update,

Agency pulled me out from this job suddenly. Turns out, that i was a holiday filler for someone else and the last 3 days i spent in canteen basically doing nothing for 8 hours.
The waste company called the agency saying we don’t need him as holiday dude came back.

The hunt for a next job begins again.

Been a few months now. Any luck?

Any luck at all?

Feel really bad for you pal, they are taking the ■■■■ out of you!

I passed in October and have worked since the day after getting my cards back. I took some 7.5t home delivery work at first through Driver Hire. They have been great with me and I have this past week started my first class 2 job, doing nights for Argos out of Heywood. Really clean, easy work and only 8 hour shifts so a nice way to ease myself into nights.

Try something like this uk.indeed.com/jobs?q=hgv%20clas … 3eb37dceea its 7.5t work but will get hours on your tacho.

If you haven’t already, contact your local Driver Hire. They are often more willing to give new pass drivers a chance and if you are willing, will generally find you consistent work. Won’t be the best, but for now, it’s about the experience.

Good luck pal.

Good day Gentleman,

I am really sorry for not replying for a while now. It’s been a busy period for me.

To update you all on my ventures:
I had a job at Biffa - waste management company at St. Leonards on sea depot as a driver. It was really good job and i have enjoyed it. But unfortunately, the drivers are also required to load the bins ( as management described “on odd days” ). Turns out, the ratio of driving and loading was 1:4 (1 day driving and 4 days loading). I have had a chat with the manager and i explained to him politely, that i quit a good job and came here only because you advertised for a driver and now i’m basically loading. I also said, that i am not afraid of hard work and i fully understand the small print where new guy must go through every role, to understand how the business works, but i have been loading bins for the last month at this time. He answered “now we don’t have driving positions available, but because i have proven that i am a hard worker, he will put me in a seat once one becomes available”. Sounds good, but here’s the twist, the week before that conversation, two drivers resigned plus Biffa advertised on their www for a new driver position.
I would understand, if i would cause problems or some accidents but i have driven on multiple different rounds, reversed on such narrow roads where i had to fold in both mirrors, every crew i was with, were happy and 2 of them requested me to be their driver.
So to conclude this chapter, Dustcarts are really good to practice and gain skills very quickly, but unfortunately management of that depot do not take you seriously or maybe there’s a lack of communication.

My next chapter began just a week ago with Brakes, as a multidrop driver at Brighton and so far so good. The company is really professional and treat you with respect. The drivers are friendly and willing to help, which is so important for a new comers like me.
Yes, it is a hard work and cold at times, as the freezer in my lorry reaches -23C, but i really appreciate that they gave me a chance i’ve been waiting for a long time.

To summarise, you guys were right, saying that the market for drivers starts around February/March
Now, i am waiting for my practical test on class 1 and it’ll be a long one, because there is a long waiting list due to lockdown.

Thank you all for the support you have offered through my journey and i do hope you will check this post at some points, as i will keep updating some stuff.
I hope you’ll have enjoyable weekend!!!

Well done! glad to see have managed to get a job sorted and even better being one you like!

Keep the updates coming, its good to hear from new drivers and the first ventures into driving life

I started out on DBC food doing a similar job to Brakes. It is a hard job, but arguably a very good way of getting experience and learning how to drive. Doing 20 schools in a day means 20 awkward deliveries plus a load of graft too.

You’ll sharpen your skills much faster than doing one one or two drops and lots of driving.

Paddock wood?

Hi Adrian

Glad to hear you got a job with Brakes .

I also have a job interview with Brakes (London Park Royal ) this coming Thursday , would you mind sharing some information about the interview/assessment day please ?
it is going to be my first job interview as a driver so I could use some help, any tips and information would be appreciated .

Cheers

Nick

I started my first job since passing last week working for a Timber and building supplies company.
The job is really good, the team I work with are like a little family it makes it nice to get up and go to work.
The only thing is its like learning to drive again as its a big 28ton Iveco with rear steering, which is interesting as now I can get around round about without coming close to riding over the kerb :stuck_out_tongue:

Still a week in im loving the job and they are happy to put me through a HIAB test so that ticks off another think I want to be able to learn

Think I just got lucky so now I hope I don’t screw it up

Hi NIck,

Thank you for taking the time reading my posts  and well done securing the interview!!
i do understand your fear when it comes to interviews and i imagine you have probably lots of questions?
All you have to do at the interview is (at least that’s my approach):

  • dress up smart - in my opinion, you show an effort and respect to anyone who interviews you plus you present yourself as a serious person - if that makes sense.
  • questions during the interview - there are no questions, which should surprise you really. All i can advise, is to be honest.
  • driving assessment - stay calm! The assessor wants to see good control of the vehicle. It really doesn’t matter if you reverse really slowly or if you will get out to check the back of the lorry 5 times. Bottom line is: they’ll give you tool, which costs around £50k (or more) and they want to see that you are really careful with it and will bring it back in one piece everyday. Not sure what lorry’s London depot is using, but if it’s DAF i would advise you to use “hill brake assist”, as DAF has really lazy gear box when it comes to switching to first gear after a stop.

If that is your first driving job, obviously they are aware that you are a new pass and it gives you some degree of forgiveness ( small one ), but at the same time they’ll expect good awareness ( road reading ).
Nick, i wish you the best of luck with your interview and please update us how it went!!

Hi Jaykun85,

That is so awesome!! well done!!

I had rear steering axle in dustcarts, which really helps in tight corners - i know what you mean
But at the same time, the swing of the rear is much greater so have to be more careful.

Yes, i do agree with you - if people you work for/with are nice, it is so much pleasant to go to work.
You won’t screw up! just do the best you can. Also i will add (and i quote) be the stupidest in the room* this video will explain youtube.com/watch?v=BkLzo_oNVho
i do hope i can post youtube links here
