Christmas

A Sugar Mouse :open_mouth: you were lucky.

All our stockings had holes in them, so we had to hang a pillow slip on the end of our bed and there were always a couple of Tangerines in it the next morning.

Come to think of it, we also had a load of nuts. Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Hazel Nuts which were all still in their shells so then you had to queue up to use my dad’s two-pound hammer.

Hit them nuts too hard and you had flat mush & full of crushed shell, does anyone still buy mixed nuts for Christmas, and Dates IIRC of course if you got Tangerines or an Orange in your sock it was a treat as not over common back then if you are my age  Buzzer

Many years ago in’t owd’n days you worked up to Christmas eve and maybe ( if lucky) had a few drinks early afternoon or early evening then you got Christmas day off and were usually back at work Boxing day and then New Years day was just another work day ! In Scotland Christmas was never the main celebration but come New year Hogmanay was always a two day holiday in Scotland then back to work ! However, come the three day week in 1973 the rot set in and the extended Christmas holiday became a permanent feature and over the years has elongated into more or less a two week shut down so there is no way in the near future that a return to the good 'owd days will happen ! I accept that many retail staff and drivers still do work over the Christmas period but the great majority stop work for the duration ! Cheers Bewick.

As a child of the 1960’s for me I had no complaints with so called commercialism.
I was happy to have grown up with the best of Triang and Corgi and Scalextric and will always remember the 1/24th scale Spitfire Airfix kit that I spent my holiday putting together and couldn’t believe how great it looked when it was finished and painted and on its stand at an angle as if banking with its electric motor driven prop running.

Most factories traditionally shut down for around two weeks with no effect on holiday entitlement.
I can remember my Dad and I lazing around watching Christmas holiday Tele and eating leftover turkey and ham rolls between Christmas and New Year while my poor mum had to go back to work in her retail job after boxing day.

We know its Christmas as television puts on all the crap we have seen a hundred times before, all the old films “The Eagle has landed” “Dambuster’s” and the likes lets hope we don’t get Morcombe & Wise, how long have they been dead, think I will lose the will to breath, Buzzer

This thread began with good-natured Christmas Goodwill wishes.

It was appropriate to leave it here, as a short-term seasonal cameo of polite and respectful greetings.

It is now in danger of becoming the province of angry old buggers intent on attacking what shreds of goodwill are left to us. Continuation of this trend will tip the thread into Bully’s.

The disgruntled and bitter on here should revive the ‘Bah Humbug’ thread (which I even contributed myself as a non-Christian who is also ambivilent about Christmas) which served us well for a few years. It ran for 23 pages! I’ve just bumped it up in Bully’s for you

HO HO NO not allowed freedom of speech not even on here, stand in the corner with the dunce hat on or you will be sent to Bully’s, what it is to have power over minnion’s.

I have to agree with you Buzzer it’s a lot of expense that people allegedly can’t afford ( but that’s ok got a credit card) but still, happy Christmas to you all. :sunglasses:

Well I reckon if all the unreconstructed , non PC, Dinosaurs were slung off the TN site there would be very few members left to keep the site viable and lets face it what would be left would be the biggest load of whitewashed PC waffle imaginable. I agree with Buzzer that free speech is being gradually drained and banned from our society well from the society I grew up in which was a far better time to live than what we have to tolerate today ! As an example you have only got to look at the “Stop Oil Brigade” ! How the F — that those Wallies are are allowed to get away with their antics is absolutely beyond me ! I wish they would allow me to deal with the idiots I reckon I could stop their game in their tracks period !
We’re now back in the 70’s with the Public sector Brothers flexing their muscles but they have got to be dealt with once and for all when considering what we have been through with the pandemic and the damage the war in Ukraine is doing you might have thought that a bit of common sense may prevail ! But where unions are concerned common sense is an unknown quantity and I know this from personal experience so nothing has changed over the years ! Rant over and goodnight ! Bewick.

Bewick,
Not a rant a bit of the “old home truth” all of us at a certain age feel exactly the same as you! However we all know nothing will ever go back in time [whish it would]what with all the adverts on telly, they cannot stand still forever jigging about ,the trouble is there are so many people in charge of all media who have no idea of the 1970,s 1980s,and not BRITISH not even from our country ,Why should we keep quiet. seasonal greetings to all.dbp.

Hiya DBP ! Aye I guess we’re a dying breed but some of us are still around and refusing to “die” but are steadily being stifled eh !
I suppose that the weight of numbers are growing against us and society is changing but f— it I and a good few still of the same opinions refuse to be gagged but unfortunately we are been steadily cancelled by the PC mob ! Anyhow DBP a
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year ! Regards Dennis.

Dennis, you are just saying what I think at least 95% of the world is thinking.

I was on another good website yesterday and I came across this comment from somebody.

“I only had one address on my paper round that took The Morning Star, it was the Heathrow baggage handlers trade union rep, I believe. Man of tut workin’ folk. Detached house, double garage and two nice cars”.

And then this morning I came across this. :unamused:

dailymail.co.uk/news/articl … trike.html

Merry Christmas everyone.

Well said “pdp” unfortunately we are a dying breed and are sadly becoming outnumbered by the PC aerosols who have never got over the result of the Brexit vote and who are now crowing that the section of the populace that carried the vote are steadily dying out and the younger generation ( who haven’t got a f---- clue) will ensure that the UK will rejoin the corrupt EU in the not too distant future well I hope I’ll not be around to witness the disaster which would again befall this fine country of ours !
All the Best for 2023 Regards Dennis.
