They used to call these jennings sleepers “the heartbreak hotel”
It wasn’t a sleeper, it was a shelf.
And not a very wide shelf, either!

Aye ROF but drivers in those days were fit and slim with all the handball and sheeting and roping they had to do so thoses bunks were OK I suppose ! un-like the plump “steerers” of to-day who only have to open the rear doors or if they are really unlucky, undo the straps and slide the curtain Cheers Bewick.
If I remember correctly, we called them a Jennings pod, after the makers, and believe me, if you worked in mid and south Cheshire in the late 60’s and early 70’s and you had one of those on your ERF you were king of the road, you made sure that on every trip to the smoke you parked on Toddy services on the way home, to show off!!
I must admit I never had one on an LV or an A-series (all day cabs) but I did have the “pleasure” of one on an Atki for a while.
Hiya…WOW an A series ERF with a jennings pigeon coup and a 240 Gardner…king of the road… the mattress was the same width
as a DAF 2800 but it folded down the middle…a far better sleep than been across the bonnet belive me i did it…Allmans from Congleton
still have an ERF the same model as the Stevens one but it has no sheet rack on the roof.
John
I didn’t mind the Jennings extension on the B-series, except that it still leaked engine fumes into the cab due to the “ventilation” gaps in the plywood floor!

Not too sure about a Vic Wild connection with those Gleaves, but I think there’s another Gleave family at Nantwich that show a nice old Sentinel steamer, so maybe something to do with them?.
The brother of Reg Stevens aka R,H,Stevens of Macclesfield is / was Fred Stevens, who later changed the company, or name of the company to STD Transport, the last time I had dealings with them they were on the Ind Est in Congleton, having moved there from Lime Green in Macc and were running Iveco units.Some other Cheshire hauliers from the past;
S,C, Fernyhough, Swythamley, recently died.

James irlam had the Manchester liners container work for years using ERFs with 6 lv cabs…
…the other Stevens was Speedwell from Macclesfield. they run Blue Merc,s
John
Yer right, cozy- they were Stevo’s. Mostly ERFs with ■■■■■■■ if I remember correctly, with the odd Volvo flat top when it wasn’t required on the continent. It was quite a blow when ML finished, although the powder tankers still officially belonged to R H Stevens (Containers) Ltd. until the end of trading.

Taken about 20 years ago apparently - anyone know if they’re still running / working?
iam certain someone told me the Atki day cab was standing on farmland between leek and congleton with no engine; this
chap was considering having the cab. that was about 5 years ago
As far as I know Bostock’s are still in business, although I believe that they only have one vehicle on the road, a six-wheeler with curtainsider body. The telephone number is still active.
I think they have a 4 wheelerAtki in preservation . thank you Trevor .
I saw a leyland daf of theirs last week, can’t remember if it was a 4 or 6 wheeler, green curtains I think
Photos taken between 1992 & 1995 - lovingly restored - be a shame if they’ve fallen by the wayside again - Bostocks also had coaches I seem to recall
