Hi lads,
been reading this thread with great interest, some great stories of C&B.
Just thought you all should know that the may issue of truck & driver has an article called " some like it hot " about a guys 1st trip tp the middle east with an old ex JCB F88 240, on this trip he bumps into a bloke called Cliff Nicholson who’s driving an F88 240 reg looks like RWG 846N for C & B, also there are a few more names and referances on it also a couple of good pictures especially the Chapmans F88.
Cheers lads for the nostagia, and many more to come…

One thing that sticks in my mind was when we first went into C and Bs yard I had pop rivited a TIR plate to the front of our unit, the first thing Jack said to us was take that off. why we said, he said if there is a problem with your trailer, paper work or brakedown you could drop your trailer and come home. But if you had the unit sealed on TIR it would have to stay together. Yet even today you see TIR plates on the front of units.Whats your thoughts on that, anybody.Regards Keith
dead right, we used to get poseurs wanting the fitter to put one on the front of the cab when we started doing russia with the motors that only usually did EEC work - it’s the load carrying part which should display TIR plates only
TIR plates were always fitted to the unit and front and rear of the trailer.
Only the TIR plates on the traler were plumbed, and only the trailer number put on the TIR carnet. On sight it could be seen that a rig was on a TIR journey, but if there were problems where a change of unit was called for, then there were no problems.
Hi boys
My father got pulled in France when doing a Europe trip and was fined for displaying TIR plates when not needed. After that we used to put a strip of insulation tape corner to corner across the plates.BTW I think I’m right in saying anyone running on STAGO plates should do the same when not running under those regs
Regards Keith.

Chapman & Ball were based at Sneyd hill Estate Stoke on Trent the m /d was ■■■■ Chapman and his partner was Arnie Ball . they ran a fleet of bulk tippers on U/K work and about 10 units and 16 trailers plus up to 6 owner drivers doing mainly Eastern Bloc. Europe , and . Middle East. The main contract we had was with B A C in lancashire out to Dahran with ,spare parts and equipment to air bases. Transport Manager was Jack Corrie and his assistant was John Jones. Both were good guys to work with and very fair with the drivers, Jack went on to become the ;cor; in Litcor and towards the end of my time there we were merging with Woods of Salford and Jenkinsons who were then at Littleborough, We ended up doing fridge work to Poland and Yugoslavia re loading blackcurrants for Ribena or plums to the markets. then we started doing Portacabins out to all sorts of silly places , with extending trailers for the 60 foot cabins.in the end our units were being painted orange and white and Trans Border Group Of Companies logo on the sides.hope this puts record straight.Jack then went on to start and run Halcion Haulage until his death a year or two ago.
I used to get back loads from a firm called Halcion Haulage a few years ago, ran light blue bulk tippers. Only delt with them over the phone, but always with a guy called Jack, would this be the same Jack as in your post?
At a guess would say it was Jack Corrie, they were mostly on tippers.
Could have had an office bod called Jack I suppose.
IF he was scouse then it was jc – jack was a hard taskmaster but fair – i started work for him as my dad peter mccutcheon was transport manager for a while
Does anyone have photos of the Chapman& Ball office staff in the 1970ies please ? Would love to see a picture of my mum Edith the receptionist, tall lady, short dark hair. Thank you.
There are quite a lot of pics of C&B on the various Middle-East threads. Here’s a handful I downloaded from TN ages ago.
Do you remember my mum Edith in the office at Chapman & Ball in the mid 1970ies please ? - tall lady, slim, black hair. She had a friend who also worked there name Jill.
