only good if yer get paid for yer 45min break

i currently work in bridlington (retail) working part time and was considering a job in scarborough full time (class 1),when i worked out driving 40 miles a day (fuel and wear and tear) plus losing tax credits and paying full council tax, even if i had been doing 50 hours a week at £8 ph instead of the minimum wage i would be worse off.I miss driving but do’nt want to be a busy fool.

Rooster:
My son has aked for a job shelf stacking at our local Aldi, and there on nearly £11 on nights, and what do you earn ?

Truckers are being ripped off !!!

No good if your only doing 16hours a week though is it…

The best thing that could happen is for all the little whinging drivers to ■■■■ off and go and do exactly what they claim is a much better job [shelf stacking]…

Only holding a Class 2, the natural progression would be to pass my Class 1, but I’m not entirely sure if I want to, listening to some of the lads at our place. I kind of fancy doing my forklift test and maybe trying my hand at warehousing etc.

if a decent class 1 job came up in brid tomorrow i would be off,the good thing about driving is time goes fast but you have to weigh up all the pro’s and con’s when you have to pay to work i.e. £50 a week in fuel.when i was on agency a few years ago i can remember a guy from hornsea who would travel to ups batley for a £100 shift :open_mouth:

What are the lads at your place saying then?

The first lesson you should have learnt on becoming a driver is to not listen to other drivers and certainly not let the rubbish they spout dictate your future path.

The usual, sounds like they’re worked into the ground, you barely see them during the week. Granted, there’s other companies to work for around here, I know a kid at Isotank who said he’d get me in if I passed my Class 1 and ADR but I reckon a forklift license is a little bit cheaper

^^^THIS^^^ Boys go and burst your little bubble and see how bad it really is out there when you’re not in your cab! Can’t close the door on a shelf and drive off, unless you quit of course!

switchlogic:
Go stack shelves. I’ve heard its an amazing job compared to driving a truck. Go for it

thetastytrucker:
Done that :grimacing:

Let me guess in the cold light of day when you finally started doing it. It was not as good as it initially sounded or looked from the other side of the fence. Especially when you start cleaning ■■■■ and vomit off the floor.

Before you say, they have a cleaner. If that ever happened in Aldi you’d be expected to clean it up if you was the unlucky one to get tasked with it. They don’t do store cleaners like the big 4 do, helps keeps the costs down and the profits up!

So no-one else in different industries has to pay to travel to work? It’s not a conspiracy against lorry drivers to have to pay their own commuting costs and somehow everyone else gets paid theirs in full no questions asked :unamused:

I can imagine it now. Pssssttt heres your commuting form to fill out and get every penny back from HMRC…only condition never tell a lorry driver this perk exists ok, otherwise we’ll make you become a lorry driver! :unamused: Give me strength.

FFS you boys make it too easy

Not only the first but one of the most important ones to remember too! They’ll only try to bring you down to their manic depressive state

My advice - do what you enjoy. Life’s not a rehearsal.

If you enjoy driving - drive.

If you don’t - find something you do and find a way to make the finances fit. Even if that means a massive lifestyle change or relocation. If its that big a deal to you make sacrifices.

If you don’t think you can do that - work to live I.e look forward to days off. Plan things. Set yourself goals such as 10 hours of this pays my car loan. This night out is paying for a decent meal at the weekend, things like that.

ive worked in a few different jobs that paid fairly good money for the hours, hated them all with a passion but im really enjoying being a driver even though its hard work, long hours and very stressful at times i still look forward to going in everyday and ive never been able to say that before in my life.
