Last I was told was that European legislation had outlawed artic car transporters with a peak deck being built new.
m1cks:
I saw a stobarts unit pulling a old style trailer today (although it was brand new)
I did wonder when they went into the transporter business if they’d stop using the drawbar type of transporter in favour of tractor trailer combination.

I’ve already apologised for not knowing the correct terms for transporter trailers as its not an industry I’ve ever driven in.
To clear things up - it was a NEW trailer being pulled by a standard height unit.
It was a peak ‘style’ without the peak over the cab. I’m not sure if there is a different name for these. I only used peak to distinguish between a 40ft trailer and drawbar combination.

No probs mate no one having a go.
We called 'em all sorts of things the standard artic transporter trailer, most of which in the old days had a peak, so ‘‘artic with peak deck’’ i suppose would decribe it perfectly…invariably they were known by their designation…ie Hoyner mk7 or whatever or Transporter Engineering 3 Decker, then we’d know what body we were getting or more likely trying to avoid like the plague…
If fully trained Autologic (and other companies that were swallowed up before Stobby got involved) drivers are using these new trailers and they carry less then i expect they are on Ferry work, carrying less vehicles but easier quicker almost damage free operation
Walon cut down some old 3 deck artics to ferry Land/Range Rovers a few years ago, they could only carry 6 instead of 7 on the bigger bodies but they were so quick to load/unload being two solid decks, and utilising older kit like this for several more years made sense and worked out cost effective…plus intensive hammering up and down the decks with LR’s knocked hell out of the complicated 11 car carriers.
Juddian sorry for late repy yes it is an EHR cracking bit of kit very flexable with todays mix of car shapes . Been told buy company artic trailer are being bought for newer drivers to gain experience on and so in the peak periods any unit can be coupled to them and less intense training needed they are electric powered or have a donkey engine so no need for PTO s. New waggon and drags are on order but due to long lead times getting build slots will take a few years to replace ageing fleet.we think maybe 30 to start later this year and one by one all 100 EHR s are being refurbished. You will never compete with artics as they only carry 6 or 7 instead of 11 but is cheaper than using continetal companys in peak times as even in this country most still will not load over 4 m high so still only carry 7 or 8 and being on day rate dont really get on with it hope this is of intrest

No, thats great thanks Tubbs, always good to hear from the geezers at the coal face whats really happening.
Meself and many of my oppos are now out of it, and to be honest very glad to be, i wouldn’t go back on it now no matter how much money was promised.
I don’t think many appreciate just how hard the job is, the top line can be good but every single penny is paid for with blood sweat and headaches…but then you know that.

A friend today saws 3 czech plated Walon transporter fully loaded with new cars
There a long way from home,
were they going south carrying Vauxhall’s? if so they were more than likely shunting car’s from humber sea terminal to purfleet, and they chose these people to do it, I was working at humber sea terminal pulling the Vauxhall’s out of the compound’s for them. it was a nightmare at time’s as the uk one’s can take 11/12/13 (we have seen 13 adam’s on a couple of uk one’s before now) and the Czech one would only take 7/8 car’s and would refuse to run above 4mtrs, even though they were in the uk only…
since found out that they have started putting purfleet’s through hst and they have also had a ford boat drop 1000 car’s off as well so glad i’m only on there fixing trailer’s only now…
