bullitt:
Havent a clue how old or accurate this link is but it gives a list of occupations and their relevant insurance classes…rapidinsure.co.uk/occupational-classes.asp
The link doesnt say as to whether the list is relevant to just that one company or if it is a generic list used by all UK insurance companies.
Isn’t this for life insurance risks?

Aha! Good point Mick. rapidinsure.co.uk/
Appears NOT to be motor insurance… hence why the classes are as they are - ie. high risk of death/injury = class 4, low risk = class 1.

Put in an amount in top left box. Select sector from list in bottom left box and click submit. Then, scroll down to where it says ‘try another sector’ and click on the blue links that appear on the left. Some research reveals than being a police officer is by far the cheapest occupation for motor insurance, closely followed by fireman, registrar, fire prevention office, paramedic, teacher and taxman.

They worked out £350 cheaper for me than my previous company, and over £200 for the wife.
You can pay via direct debit with no payment up front, AND interest free, and their breakdown cover far outstrips any similar cover provided by other insurance companies. IIRC, it’s around £65 which includes Euro cover.
Ken.
Quoting ins prices is pointless unless you state the excess for both as well. I could have free insurance cover if I wanted, so long as I agreed to a £450 excess.
You should always go for a higher excess to lower the premium. Think about it - Your car is worth maybe £1000; if you slide off the raod on some ice and bash a wing and a bumper the garage will likely quote £750 or more for the repair. The insurance Co will write the car off and say it’s worth £500. If they do pay for the repair then your premium will double.
Obviously you would be better off to pay the repair yourself and not tell them, so what’s the point of a low excess?
If you are the innocent victim in an accident then you can claim your excess from the third party.

Eh, occupation is one thing.
Insurers are just looking to rip us off. Example?
When I had my accident, next year I had to pay more. I asked why? My accident was that some idiot crashed in my back when I was stationary on the red light.
They said “statistically speaking next accident will be caused by you”. I told them that firstly, statisticaly speaking me and my cat have three legs and half of the tail each, and secondly, why they charge me if I haven’t that accident yet?
Second thing was just recently.
I moved to the new adress (which costed me 20 quids extra. Have you ever met anybody who moved to place when insuranse was CHEAPER?) and wanted to remove my ex from who is additional driver on my policy.
They said “OK, it will cost you 59 extra”. How on Earth? When I added her, it costed me 21 extra as the risk increased? They told me that now statistically speaking my car is more likely to have accident, as she was very good driver and a woman. So I said “Ok, in that case leave her on”. They told me they cannot do it, as I already told them she won’t be driving anymore (not that she was driving at all, she does not drive, although she has a license, I was just keeping her in case of emergency). I answered “Ok, but if that is going to cost me 59 quids, I would rather buy her a beer once a year for a favour of driving my car to the end of the street and back”. They said it’s impossible, as they already deleted her, but I can add her if I pay them 21 extra.
So see: no matter if I want add her or remove, they will charge me extra.
I asked if she’s worth MINUS 59 quids, if she would like to insure her own car with them, will they pay HER for that pleasure? They went angry and said that I should not tell them jokes. I told them it’s not me who’s telling jokes, and if it’s impossible to leave it as it was (with her in my policy and without any extra charges) it will be impossible for me to stay with them next year.
Guess what? “They don’t do it usually, but I am so valuable customer, that they decided to make an extemption”.

Now this new issue with insurance for womans. You propably heard that cheaper insurance for woman is discrimination. I welcomed this at first, as I think it’s not fair I have to pay more only because I am male.
But see what it brings? It’s outrage, all womans moan that they will have pay more… But noone seems to notice one thing:
The amount of risk stay the same, but woman have to pay the same amount as man. It does not mean “the woman have to pay the same amount as man pay NOW”. It’s mean “they have to pay the same”.
The same amount of risk, woman pay more, so man should pay less.
Simplified: if so far woman was paying 80 and man was paying 100, we all now should pay 90. But instead of that, both woman and man will pay 100. Who will get that money? Insurance ■■■■■■■■■

From personal experience lowering the excess by £200 increased the premium by £5. A good deal as far as I was concerned.
One other point, loyalty to a particular company is generally a waste of money. I have three cars and they are all insured with diferent companies, which I change as soon as they increase my premiums. In January my renewal went from £106 to £141, I got another quote at £109. A lot of companies do auto-renewal and people get lazy. Another point is avoid comparison sites, they are only brokers, part of your premium goes to them. Deal with insurers direct.
What i do is use the comparison site to find top 3 deals then go to those websites, without clicking the links i google them.
Comparison sites are a load of ZB, pure ripoff, how they can be the cheapest deal when its going through a 3rd party ? ofcourse they want their share. Waste of time. Try www.swiftcover.com very good imo
I change insurance company every year, I always get it cheaper than the renewal. One year got renewal down from the AA, went on comparison site and got it cheaper - with the AA,wtf!
Also, just had ding in my car, bloke pulls out of side road, insurance company keep phoning me to ask if I’m OK and have I got any pains, do you need to get checked out and to let them know if I feel the need to go to the quack It was only a ding.
I just got a quote from CSIS for a BMW530D for £209 against £340 that I am paying now. I increased the voluntary excess by £150 and got a £7 reduction in the premium, so not worth the increase in voluntary excess.
Bin your old insurance every year do a webscrape and tell them you work in a warehouse, some of these spurious companies like More Than or Halifax have been good to me. £128 for a Rover 75 oiler but not tried to renew it this year though.
