Cantrell's Raiders

muhandis89:
Remember Robbie well, and his accountant, who looked like a boxer, with a ring in his ear(before that became fashionable). We played cricket in the yard, while all the phones rang,in the portacabins!!On the Middle East run,he had a guy called Nutnut, who used to try to ‘persuade’ his guys on to Iran from the Mocamp, before they spent all of their running money. One of Cantrell’s bad habits was to load a large number of trailers, for the Middle East, and then draw 50% of the freight, and dump the loaded trailers. However if you helped them, they were loyal. Most of his Middle East guys had electric pumps,to take diesel from other trucks! Where are they now? Probably on the Costas!

This was one stunt pulled on Chapman and Ball by some unscrupulous southerners,(No names,no pack drill!).loaded a lot of trailers, drew the advance money then parked em up and ■■■■■■ off.Caused C & B a big problem and could have been the reason for their demise.
I mentioned on another thread, that Jack Corrie who was TM at C & B in those days died last week and I went to his funeral yesterday,a big turnout.

Didn’t Black John used to work for Cantrells doing Italy? and
Dave the Arab and does anyone remember Tehrani Barney who had a black
and yellow scania and could speak goodish farsi. they had a few units
painted black and yellow and a
different name on them. A few berliets as well,
one of them was known as berliet bill, and one of them only ate 5 egg
omlettes. Lots of lads on for them and some really sound too. Some not so.
Two of their bosses turned up in Teheran early 1975 by surprise to find out
what was going on. Bought us all a few beers, but it was a funny atmosphere
to say the least. Some of their lads were doing internals to Bandar Abbass
to load grain for Teheran . 4 day trip 500 quid for 25
tons and 25.quid for deisel. .Better than their trip wages.

. .
There were about 12 of us living in one room in the Nader Shah hotel between
runs hot bedding, and then Tanker Bill showed up looking for units and trailers
for some insurance companies who had been stitched up, and we all got paid
well to bring the ■■■■■■ backs to uk and lived happily ever after. Hope nobody
gets a slap after all this time!

I see an old post referring to Slippery Mick from Cantrells.

In the 70`s he was driving an F89 wagon and trailer for cantrells.
Are you still about mate?

I need to thank you for pulling me out of the ■■■■ [literaly] with your rigid bar when I got stuck doing a u turn [long story]

Better late than never, it was 35 yrs ago !

SUPERCUBE:
seems like the cantrells thread has been hijacked, one of their drivers mickey higgins aka slippery mick ,worked with him on eddie morgans at hainault in late 60s,we were doing traction for sammy williams, eic roadliners etc ,

I havnt heard that name in years supercube,my dad and uncle used to work with mick and colin berry(RIP) on cantrells, they were all good mates knocked about together for years.heard some funny stories that went on.

churchyboy:

The driver second from left with the tattoo on his chest looks like johnnie mc thurson (spelling may be wrong) who came from east london and worked on sca for a while,he was Jeff Sears brother in law jeff also was a driver on sca and then he worked in the office.

Look’s like my hubby Terry Waters second from left.
As far as I know these guys are from left to right, Mick Brown, Terry Waters, Barry Church. Anyone remember the others.

Sorry i got it wrong, nearly 37 years since i have seen Johnnie Mc,maybe someone on here will remember him.He worked for martintrux then sca in around 71/72.

I remember John ,we were good mates. Last I saw of him was at the Old Trafford truck stop when they still had strippers. We had a good night & then he went off the radar .

Did Freddy Noble ever work for Cantrells? he would have fitted the part as he always had a long hose and a pump with him and I’ve a feeling he mentioned working for them but it could have been after a lot of Metaxa.

Sorry to hear about Jack Corrie, I remember him as Transport Manager for Gillards, Stoke-On-Trent operations and later as the owner of Halcion Haulage.

Regards,

John.

A mate of mine who knew them thought that Tony passed away about 8 years ago. He didn’t know if Rob was still about.

The ’ accountant ’ could have been the late Roy Shaw.
