Canada ice road truckers

Ever wonder why they have "Newbies"every year?

My guess is because it is seasonal work. during the off season, some of the guys find other jobs.

I’ve known truckers up north who like to work only in the winter (not just on the ice roads) and then spend 5 months in Mexico or Thailand. This is great until they get married and then need to be at home more often to make sure the sweet thing that they have brought home remains faithful.

There’s always a high turnover of drivers and workers in the north of Canada. The money is good, but people’s lives change. You rarely find people who have done it for more than a few years.

This reminds of a painter who had a government contract. He made a killing up there. He would be gone for a few months at a time. As a good husband he gave all his money to his wife. After 9 years and about $500.00 in the bank, he went up for his last time and was planning to retire. He returned to Edmonton to find that all he had was gone. His wife too.

Thanks for correcting me. The amount was $500.000 and this was in 1990. At that time, and for his age, it was enough for him to retire. He saved about $60.000 a year, and this was during the 1980’s and 70’s. He would be gone for 3 months and home for a month. He never complained about it but being gone for so long at a time and working in remote areas is not for everyone. He was focussed and his goal but ended up getting cheated.

The last I heard is that he returned to his painting contracts but said he didn’t need to save as much money because it was only him who he had to support for his retirement.

Yeah. Thailand is the capital for stories like that ,& they’re all true. :frowning:

I don’t know where you read that the story was from Thailand.

This may sound a bit daft but why don’t the ice road trucking companies use hovercraft? They could supply the mines summer and winter.

Thai has the same true stories about trusting men & devious women, but more of 'em per square mile. The moral is that absence don’t make the heart grow fonder !!!
