Hants police appeal for help following the tragic death of a 10 year old boy in a hit and run accident
1 September 2004
Officers from Hampshire police Road Death Investigation Team (RDIT) are urgently appealing for help from lorry drivers across the country after a 10-year-old boy was killed in a fail to stop collision on the Westbound A303 at Cholderton yesterday afternoon (August 31)
Shortly before 2pm a silver V registration Peugeot 306 HDi travelling in lane two of the carriageway was struck by a lorry as it pulled out behind the car.
The collision caused the car to spin across lane one and into a lay-by where it struck a stationary yellow low loader lorry.
The lorry which pulled out behind the car failed to stop at the scene of the collision. It’s believed it then turned off of the A303 at the A338 turning.
The lorry is described as having a white cab with blue sides and back, with some form of red lettering on a plate attached to the rear of the lorry.
The Peugeot contained a 39-year-old man who was driving, and a 10-year-old boy, who was a front seat passenger. Both were from the Milton Keynes area.
The 10-year-old boy, Harry Luke Simcox, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Odstock Hospital in Salisbury where he died of his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle sustained serious head injuries and was also taken to Odstock hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.
Officers from the RDIT are urgently appealing for help in tracing the lorry.
The team is also interested in tracing a similar vehicle that may have had a plate on its rear carrying either the letters AA LL EN, or A(followed by a motif) LL EN.
It’s believed the plate may have had red lettering on a white background. This vehicle may or may not have been the lorry involved in the collision.
Inspector Dave Watkins who’s leading the investigation said:
“It’s vital that we identify all the vehicles involved in this tragic collision. We are particularly interested in identifying the blue and white lorry with the red lettering on a plate attached to its rear.
“Somebody must have either seen the lorry travelling from the Andover area towards the westcountry, or know something about the driver or the vehicle itself.
“We know the lorry turned off the A303 at the A338 turning and we would appeal for anyone who saw the lorry around the time of the incident, or who has any information about it, or its whereabouts to contact us.”
“We also need people to come forward with information about the vehicle with the lettering AA LL EN. This is particularly unusual and distinctive and may have been either the vehicles registration plate or a personalised plate for the lorry or the driver.”
Anyone with information about any of the vehicles or who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Operation Rufford on 0845 045 45 45, or via email on operation.rufford@hampshire.pnn.police.uk
