Which Thompsons?

Crowle, sort of reddy brown colour as I recall.

Used to be red with brown stripe and cream signwriting. They ran nearly all Volvo’s in late 70’s & early 80’s (can remember 1 short lived 400 sed ak). Colour then changed to ‘rocket red’ with a cream stripe under the Thompson Freight Service banner.
After being sold to Martin’s they were bought by Seafield’s

Spinks Interfreight was another from that neck of the woods doing similar work.

My dad use to work for spinks many years ago

Wheel Nut:
Is it Tennant of Forth?

A couple more from memory. M R Clark and Brady.

I use to see a lot of local hauliers in and around Marchon but memory fails me to name them

Take a look on Old British Haulage Firms then click on Guests and their trucks, Scroll down and you will see my step dad ( Davie Landsborough ) with his then Seddon Diesel he used to drive for Clarks

M R Clark still on the go near Dumfries.

Looks like M R Clark have gone out of business.

No doubt Dennis will find this thread of interest.

Hiya “george” did you ever come across another “marrer” of mine the late Harry Thompson formerly of Cockermouth and latterly of Bullgill Maryport ? I think his son Gordon is still involved in haulage but he was only a young lad when I used to see them up and down road.Cheers Dennis.

Never met but I lived near Bullgill, he had two Scania 111’s, one SA 400 and one ERF B series, a question why were they in the same livery has WH Malcolm?

When I first got to know Harry in '69 he had just got a new Albion Riever 6x2 flat and he worked for Smith Bros. Whitehaven and he backloaded from J & W Watt’s London Colney office then in 1970 when up to 16 ton GVW were de-licened he put a 4 wheel ERF on and also changed the Albion for an ERF 6x2.His driver on the 4 wheeler came to work for h Harry from H &L Workington and his first name from memory was Rodney.Harry’s colour scheme was always the two shades of blue and to the best of my knowledge owed nothing to W H Malcolm!! Cheers Dennis.

Dennis did you have much to do with J & W Watt? I used to love their fleet of ERF’s.

In my first 18 months I used to backload via their London Colney office and bring all manner of goods back to Furness/South ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ and Morecambe as J&W were the London clearing house for our area and the southern part of this area was no good to J&W as they wanted north ■■■■■■■ and Scotland and they ran the main of their traffic on trunk straight back to Carlisle. They were a decent firm and always paid superior rates to anyone else plus you were paid PROMPTLY as well!! When I started to expand our operation in 1970 with the first two artics we started backloading from Robinsons Sacks (DRG group) in Rochester as well as been given 100ton parcels of wood-pulp from Tilbury back to the Mill at Beetham so all this was direct traffic and from then on we only ever used a minimum of subbed traffic as we built up a quality portfolio of “Blue Chip” customers mainly within the Paper and Converting industries.Dennis.
