Yes please can I see your photos of Johnston Brothers (Gilcrux) Ltd
I used to run into Marchon regular in the 70s,but I understand it’s nearly all gone now.I can’t see the chimney belching out from the Isle of Man anyroad.
They used to say “If yer can see t’Isle of Man from Whitehaven,it’goin’ ter rain, and if yer can’t see it then it is doing”.
oh i think stampers will be upset with you, the milk family sold up i think he was gordon, but geoff is still running, or the names might be the other way round, colin lee sold his last few wagons to armstrongs thats when they dabbled with artics and haulage, before that they just done mainly sand, most people dont believe me when i say i,ve got over 500 b&w local photos, i asked a two people if they would print them and they scoffed at the amount, strange things people, i asked a local driver if he would swop some, NO, okay then, i put on a display at the local museum, then i got sick of hearing from him,
harry pickthalls grandson runs a few, an stampers of kirkbride does mainly cattle but has a few flats and tauts sometimes subbys for stobart out of kirkbride, the old robsons store,
theres a little tanker work in marchon but thats about it, i only see the iom in july, it rains again in august,
i put some photos on when i cure my technophobia,

Greggains now part of Thomas Armstrong.
i used to work for walter, hes still got a wagon, but doesnt do much nowadays,
duncan hills son john was in my class at school. they sold out to nixons from ribton hall camerton but still trade as duncan hill, i think watson still does waste paper i,m not sure, he bought walters old spot at slowly on, after the fire,
used to get into some scrapes with walter, we went to silloth for 2 tractors, but there was no ramp at all, so we took them to the dunes walter took a tractor to the top of the dune whilst i reversed back to the bottom, the last words i heard from walter was,"move its got no @@@@@@@ brakes, i shot away whilst walter headed for the high water mark on a out of control nuffield, funny but i laughed more than he did.
Is Walter based in Johnston Brothers (Gilcrux) Ltd old yard at Bothel.
happened to john hill
i heard that he fell off a trailer, he runs a driving school in workington now, i see him on odd occasions, but i,ve asked what really happened,
sorry that last message should have read i never asked, cos i never, whenever i speak to john its something that never arises, walter has sold his share of jazzers old yard,he sold it to a truck painter from blennerhasset(cant remember his name). the yard ended up being split into four, i pop up now and then as there is a truck breaker in part of it, and you get some good photos.
those are good photos bob lad, i just cant make out the number on jazzers or i would know who was driving it,
sorry mate crap quality , me mate always sez a bad uns better than none at all
dead right too, you cant beat a good wallow in nostalgia, especially if it smells of diesel,
Great photos - thanks
I prefered it when there were lots of great fleets from ■■■■■■■■ now Stobart dominates everything.
youre so right there, we even had a better variation of colour, and if you upset one stobart boss, it goes right down the line,(i know that for a fact) and even the small subbies are in the fleet colours, the only way to tell is the fleet number, subbies only have 3 numbers, aaaand subbies even have to dress like one of santas elves also.
i know, i know, youve sussed me, but a jobs a job, and a sub contractor
shouldnt really count, aaand the wages are better than the majority of locals,
well thats it me secrets out
Where does Tyson Burridge & Duncan Hill haul from now
tysons based in distington, if you know the area, its in the old myers and bowman workshop and yard, he does a right mix of work, all the old places have closed, high duty alloys was the most recent of his clients to close.
duncans, aka nixons, run from the yard duncan had set up at crosby villa, a couple of miles from his old haunt at crosby, dunno what the tauts do, but i see his tankers in mcbrides at middleton, an they collect the china clay for iggesunds(thames board) from the dock at workington, it comes via rail, a firm used to bring it direct, errrr, groses two tone green sed-atkis, tippers an tanks.
but i think they shut when the railways moved in on the job.
its not nice to see haulage and storage being replaced by …i cant say it, it hurts, aahhhh,…logistics, phew thats it,dunno what it means, but all the modern type firms have it on the side.

Logistics was a military term when I was serving 40 odd years ago.
But I’ve noticed these last few years, nobody does TRANSPORT any more.Everyone does LOGISTICS.
i really know what it means, but i cant bring my self to use it, i will nevvvver see myself as a logistics operator, or a trucker, i will always be a wagon driver and a tramper to boot, my dad was one an it was no shame, and i am the same, theres nowt rang with being a wagon driver, or a ■■■■■■■■ one at that,
after all dont get sucked into thinking gordon brown runs the country, cos we do, its just that we let him away with to much sometimes.
an i like wagons anyhow, an i like travelling, an i like driving, an i like getting up peoples noses, an i cant think of any other trade where you need to be a
good driver, good at map reading, good at geography, good at maths, good at memory skills, good at judging weights and its distribution, good at planning,(cos planners arent), good at repairs, good at people skills, good at being honest, resourceful, etc, etc,
think about it, a good drivers wasted in any other trade, he cant reach his correct potential. thats why we do it, and do you know of any driver that feels guilty on payday that he doesnt deserve it ?.
