Buying an old unit for shows?

Thank you John, Looks like i will have to have a re-think on this, or move.

Hi Woody I was just checking my scooter(in panic after our earlier talk) and found out from the LEZ site that PRE 73 is excempt. so thats good for you.
Now back to the scooter.
John.

I own and rally a few classic lorries, my two units are taxed private heavy goods and insured via Footman James
at very reasonable rates, I have them MOT’d every year. The older ones are MOT exempt with zero rated road tax.
At Rallies and shows across the country I speak to many people who all seem to have a different view on running
artic units, one guy I know fitted a Harvey Frost jib with king pin and pushed it onto the 5th wheel and drives it
on a car licence (it is under 7.5 ton ULW) Other people seem to be under the impression that a ballast weight fitted
into the 5th wheel via the king pin and with an ULW under 7.5 tons also allows you to drive on a car licence. I personally
do not know the answer, I am currently about to sponser my daughter with HGV driving lessons to enable her to get her
HGV licence so she can help me with the classic lorries, athritus and old age making it difficult for me to climb in and
out of the Atki Borderer. regards Big Al

The coach I bought in 2002 to take my class d test on is now over 30 years old and can be driven on a car licence. At almost 40 foot long and 8 foot wide it is some car.

I do not believe that the thirty year rule applies to goods vehicles, but I may be wrong.

Hi John, That’s great news, at least i will still be able to pursue my dream now. Thank you very much for finding that out.

Hi Big Al, Have you any pics of your units ? I hope your Daughter passes her HGV and i hope she enjoys driving them as much as we all have.

Hi Waddy, Have you any pics of your coach ?

Big Al, Thank you for the pics, both the ERF and the ATKI very smart. I hope at some point i can get one to those standards.

hi
I have just gone through a nightmare trying to get my 1974 6x4 k series dodge through an mot. It was originally a long wheelbase flatbed but was restored and converted into a 6x4 tractor unit with a sliding fifth wheel just for show not piped up etc. Filled out a vtg1o (notifiable alterations) and presented it to my local test station and told the examiner it was only for classic shows, only for the examiner to say that he would not test it because it was not capable of pulling or carrying a load!.If i left the fifth wheel on i would have to have it retested and the brakes and train weights reevaluated, lost my test fee and have since taken the fifth wheel off and will attempt to re-mot in spring.
Don’t let em grind you down!!!

There was a story going around in the early 70’s that you could drive a unit without a turntable on a car licence. This was in the days before DVLC as it started out.

waddy640 when i reached 21 in 1968 you got a page to stick in your red licence with group 1 on it , before hgvs came in
that intitled you to drive anything as i i understand it when the hgv licence came in if you had been driving a lorry for
6 or 12 months you only had to have a medical i might be wrong?
