Hi Dennis. Do you know who owned LWT 147 when the photo you posted was taken? It is not in Ripponden livery. I can’t imagine it would have been very sought after when Hebble had done with it !! Ripponden coaches were blue and cream, Hebble repainted them red and cream.
Talking of strange looking Ripponden coaches, look at this beauty !! It’s one of the few Ripponden vehicles I know nothing about, any body heip with information please ?

Regards John.
Hi John, my bad as I assumed from the black and white pic that the colour scheme was the same. The logo on the side looks like Scafells or Snafells if that helps. Haven’t a clue about the other bus but I’ll dig around and see what comes up - I love a challenge.
ECP500. A Leyland Royal Tiger with bodywork by Bellhouse Hartwell. New to Hebble in 1954.
I believe she is still about. Last I heard was that she was sold to Ensign, (Dealer/Operator), a few years ago for continued restoration.
TROOPER2:
Another coach which had been new to Hebble.

Hebble had 4 of these, and I believe that all attempts to restore ECP500 sadly failed and none of the 4 survived. These were local to me and were my favorite coaches for a day trip to Blackpool when I was a lad ! I used to tell my dad " I hope we get on one of the space rockets today "
I’ve just seen a Bradford Corporation trolley bus on the M62 going westbound near Normanton on suspended tow. It was probably the fastest it has ever travelled. I would guess it came from the place just off the M180 Sandcroft ? , they had some trolleys in there . I wonder where its gone.

I believe the operator of LWT 147 was Norfolk’s (of Nayland, Suffolk), if that helps.

Yes it does, thanks very much. I know for certain that Ripponden operated it and it passed to Hebble with all the rest of their coach fleet in 1957. Either Ripponden bought it from Norfolks or Norfolks bought it from Hebble ?
As far as I know, it was new to Ripponden, and Norfolks bought it from Hebble. Norfolks seemed to have kept their vehicles to the death, so I don’t think there would have been any later owner.

Good shout. On closer examination it looks like it says Norfolks on the destination blind

It was James Whiston I do believe. I think I have a photo of a Rutland coach with a Whiston body, operated by Spiers of Henley on Thames. I’ll try and find it.
This Rutland Clipper was one of only two coaches built by this short-lived assembler, using bought-in engines, gearboxes, and axles. The body is by James Whitson and it had a Perkins R6 engine, which according to Ray Spiers was crude, noisy, rough running, and troublesome. Apart from that it was a comfortable and stylish coach. Spiers of Henley on Thames was the same family as the well-remembered haulier Spiers of Melksham.

Bradford Trolleybuses,etc.
There are at least 19 Bradford trolleybuses in preservation, most of these are based at Sandtoft Transport
Centre - the largest trolleybus museum in the world - near Doncaster, others are in Bradford itself, two
are in Keighly Bus Museum, one is at Stainforth, near Doncaster, another is in Wales…and so on. Some
of these electric vehicles are currently being restored.
So its a matter of Take Your Pick as what particular Bradford trolleybus you saw being towed on the
westbound side of the M62 Motorway,Ramone.
I’m a fairly frequent visitor to Sandtoft, the last time I was there was in October 2019 and due to the
current evil Coronavirus-COVID-19 = Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic Crisis I ain’t been back since! …and neither has anyone else.God knows when Sandtoft will be open to the general
public again In fact the whole historic motor vehicle scene - rallies, shows, museums, etc is still in
lockdown and many rallies, including the Trans Pennine Run and the Great Dorset Steam Fair Many
of these will not return until next year 2021
I’m also concerned about the Travelling Fun Fair Business and Circuses and the men and women who work
for a living in these trades:Fun fairs should be in full swing at this time of the year, but of course they
are not,due to the social distancing and lockdown I wonder when fun fairs will be back in
business again
Anyway,back to Public Service Vehicles

The Leyland Royal Tiger Motorcoach,ECP 500,shown at a vintage vehicle rally in Doncaster in the
photograph below,QV,had many owners in preservation over the years and its condition got worse
and worse, until finally it ended up at Ensign, the London bus and motorcoach dealer for
restoration - around 2001? Unfortunately,by then,it was too far gone and was scrapped

The Leyland Lioness Motorcoach,WX 1397,photograph below,QV,started life as a single decker bus
with Ripponden & District and worked as such until May 1932,when it was converted in to a van.It was
re-bodied as a motorcoach in May 1935 and numbered 21 in the fleet. Its front end styling was
influenced by the beautiful aerodynamic Chrysler Airflow and DeSoto Airflow motorcars that had
been introduced in 1934 in America. Initially, these Airflows were a success, but due to production
teething problems, fake news stories - put out by rival General Motors - that they were no good, these
beautiful motorcars had relatively poor sales. But Chrysler persevered and continued producing
annualy facelifted versions of the DeSoto Airflow in to 1936 and the Chrysler Airflow in to 1937.
Meanwhile, many of the world’s motorcar manufacturers and coachbuilders either imitated the
Airflows or copied some details of the design
Imitation in the finest form of flattery and many car makers and body builders imitated the Airflows,
including Peugeot,Volvo,Volkswagen,Singer,Toyota,Steyr,Renault,Morris-Commercial and Burlingham
See the Chrysler and DeSoto Airflow photographs below:
Chrysler’s Dodge motor truck division also produced the Dodge Airflow Motor Truck Range

Sadly internal politics plays a significant part in these museums. Sometimes the bigger the museum the bigger the problem. There are some VERY strange people attracted to this hobby. There is every chance that someone has his eye on some component. There is as much secretive hoarding as there is mutual cooperation and help.
POU 494 is a 1956 Leyland PD2/24 with East Lancs 55 seat lowbridge body originally new to King Alfred Motor Services of Winchester. Located as an exhibit in Augusta, Georgia USA in 1992 the bus was repatriated back in 1993 and was shipped to Southampton where it has been restored by the Friends of King Alfred Society and is now in full running order.
Cheers Leyland 600.
