Buses, coaches, & lorries

I expect that quite a few remeber their time on one of these:

We had plenty of those on the council used as gritters.Like the TJ I marginally preferred driving them to the TK but much preferred driving the Leyland WF to either of those.

A very smart Sheffield Corporation Leyland Atlantean with Park Royal bodywork.
YWA 119G, Fleet Number 719 is seen here in Chester Street bus station in Bradford.

Where it all began for me, February 1956, early frosty mornings, garage fitter going round with a lit diesel soaked rag on the end of a stick firing up Guy Arabs(5cyl Gardners) me on my way under the wing of a seasoned clippie complete with flask and a spare cup, yes I would do it again, what better way to start than on the wet/icy cassied streets and braes of Kirkcaldy  .

In the mid 1970s I did some coach driving jobs to earn extra money, to help fund my intention
of starting my own small transport business, which I commenced on April Fools Day, 1978.
I drove this Bedford with Plaxton bodywork on several occasions for Finch Coaches of Wigan.
The usual jobs were a coachload of Boozers to York or Thirsk Races, then on to a cabaret club,
of which there were many in Lancashire and Yorkshire, for example The Fiesta in Sheffield,
Batley Variety Club, and The Golden Garter in Manchester. The wage for such a days work was
£10.00, but a decent “Whip Round” from the passengers would increase your days pay to £40.00 or more.
I always informed the “Inland Revenue” of my “Cash In Hand” wages.
The Bedford coach is seen here in its later days in Finch`s yard, with Raymond Finch at the wheel,
and a pipeful of Condor tobacco. Regards, Ray Smyth.

A couple of adverts from 1964.

Thanks Dean. That Duple ad is quite the thing and shows that “creative licence” with the facts has been around for quite some time…

Must admit i like the lines of the old buses and coaches they really had character “ParkRoyal2100”.

I can remember these being a distinctive sight in the day they seemed to go more for the American styling.

This Leyland TD5 was new to Ribble Motor Services in 1939, and was originally fitted with bodywork
by Burlingham of Blackpool. By 1949, the bodywork needed attention, so it was sent to Alexander
at Falkirk, and fitted with the bodywork seen here. After RN 6622 was withdrawn from Ribble,
it went to bus dealer Millburn Motors, who sold it on to Benefit Shoes in Leeds for use as a Staff bus.
Bus enthusiast Dr. Harold Peers bought it in 1968, and restored it to full working order and appearance.
It is now in the care of Ribble Vehicle Preservation Trust at Freckleton, near Preston.
Regards, Ray Smyth.

I’m a Motor Vehicle Enthusiast of motor vehicles of all kinds, and have been ever since I can remember from very early childhood:motorcycles, motorcars, vans, lorries, motorcoaches, buses, military vehicles, fairground vehicles, etc, etc.

So this is a great broadranging - motor vehicle-wise - thread for me! :exclamation:

This preserved Leyland Tiger PS2/5 was originally registered CRN 984,it was re-numbered as a bus from 2784 to 234 in the Ribble re-numbering
scheme of 1951. It became a breakdown lorry,BD3,and was eventually re-registered CRN 983,but later became NSU 250. After which it was re-
registered yet again with it’s original CRN 984 registration! :exclamation:

I think that NSU250 was BD2:

I remember them all being newly built, BD1, 2 & 3, as the Ribble Central Workshops wall formed the boundary of my primary school playground!

Thanks for your information and photographs Chris  I stand corrected  So because of poor observation by a member or members of a well-known
motorcoach and bus enthusiasts organisation,Leyland Tiger PS2/2,CRN 984,Ribble BD3 was confused with, and assumed to be,sister CRN 983 BD2 :unamused: . So it was actually CRN 983 BD2 itself that was re-registered NSU 250,while CRN 984 BD3 has always been registered CRN 984…
I will now inform said motorcoach and bus enthusiasts organisation of this

I thought it was strange: CRN 983-NSU 250 BD2 is listed as being owned by Walsh,Aston-Under-Lyne…as ‘CRN 984 - CRN 983 - NSU 250’,while
the actual CRN 984 BD3 is listed as being owned by W.Higgins,Tarvin.

Ribble Leyland Atlantean 1954 has just returned from a repaint at Frenchwood, Preston,
and is seen here at Wigan bus station in Hope Street. This bus was one of 3 that were
based at Wigan depot from new in 1967. The bodywork by Northern Counties was built
just 2 miles away at Enfield Street in Pemberton.

Ribble Leyland Atlantean 1957 is seen in the back yard at the Wigan depot on Wallgate,
just half a mile south of the town. In my time with Ribble, the double deckers were kept
inside the depot overnight, but the single deckers and coaches were kept in the back yard.

Wigan Corporation ordered 6 Bristol LH single deck buses with Eastern Coachworks bodywork.
By the time they were delivered in 1974, the Wigan fleet had become part of Greater Manchester
Transport, so they received GMT livery and lettering, I think that they would looked better
in the “Carmine & White” of Wigan Corporation, known locally as “Cherry & White”.

Photos are great, but the best memories are (for me, at least) are instigated by the sounds.
