Buses, coaches, & lorries

Ray Smyth:
An interesting picture from the late 1960s. The Police cars are a Ford Anglia and an Austin Mini,
and the Liverpool Corporation bus is a Leyland PD2 with Crossley bodywork from 1956.
Picture from Bootle History Forum.

Ray Smyth.

Not just any old Mini, Ray. Liverpool Constabulary used these and later 1275cc Mini Cooper S as traffic cars from around 1967 to 1972.

The poverty police.Imagine the argument between who gets the Mini v the Anglia.Especially if they’d have found enough in the budget to put 1500 engines in the Anglias. :smiling_imp:

Eddie, Thank you for these 2 pictures. Yes it is a sad day for both your wee village and the town of Wigan
where I live. As far as I know, Shearings, formerly Smiths Happyway Spencers, and Smiths Tours have been
in Wigan for about 70 years that I am aware of. For the last 40 or so years, their Head Office was at the
end of Miry Lane, next to my depot. Their very large coach garage and workshop facility was at Bryn, just
about 3 miles away, opened by H.R.H. The Princess Royal from new. For the last 10 years it has been a bus
depot, initially with First Group, and since 2012, Stagecoach occupy it. You and Mrs M keep safe & take care.

Best regards, Ray.

Found this unique-looking Trader bus on a French forum. Is it a workshop-conversion, maybe built to carry the staff of a Factory?

A civil engineering construction company and still going.

An evocative scene from my childhood in Nottingham. Ro

And another from about 60 years ago! NMPs BTW. Ro

I remember catching one of these (possibly the same bus, who knows!?) sixty years ago, after leaving a birthday party in Nottingham and travelling to join my family in Loughborough. Children were so much freer in those days! Ro

Thanks! I had never heard about Kier before, probably because they do not operate on the Continent.

Kier are the maintenance and incident support provider for Highways England in my part of the country.

Now this South Notts Leyland PD2/12 is a proper bus with stylish Leyland Metal Framed body. I ran one for a while absolute delight to drive. Built in 1953 it is still going strong, I rode on it at the Ribble 100 rallylast year where it handled a full load no bother at all despite its 66 years. Beats a Routemasters in looks and performance any day.
Cheers, Leyland 600.
