A brand new Daimler bus for Sunderland Corporation, with bodywork by Northern Counties of Wigan
being photographed by the coachbuilders at Spencer Road, Wigan,in 1958, and the same location today.
Ray.
Bartons certainly did it with style! Would that have been one of Standerwick’s old White Ladies, or was the body a Barton piece of handiwork?
The bus next to it looks like a PD2 or 3 with Northern Counties full-frontal bodywork, possibly an ex-Southdown Queen Mary (?).

Hello Les Sylphides Here is a more detailed identification of these Barton buses in the photograph, plus other photographs.
Leyland Titan PD1A/Duple L29/26F Double Decker Omnibus,Chassis No.460700,Body No,42706,JRR 932,Nottingham CC,6-1948.Barton 464.TN,OTL,97,B-Motorcoaches-L,3-2023.BBC.3#
A front nearside view of what the above bus looked like from the same FNV,but from a sister member of the same type from the Barton motorcoach and bus fleet:-

Leyland Titan PD1A/Duple L29/26F Double Decker Omnibus,Chassis No.470453,Body No,42704,JRR 930,Nottingham CC,6-1948.Barton 509.Preserved.TN,OTL,97,B-Motorcoaches-L,3-2023.BBC.3#
The omnibus to the right of Barton 464,JRR 932, in the first photograph,is a Barton rebuild. All of these Barton rebuilds had long and interesting histories - some of them
convoluted. And the Barton rebuild in the photograph below is a typical example and belongs to the same Northern Counties double decker bus batch as the one in photograph No.1
Leyland Tiger PS1B,FF/Northern Counties FL33/30F DD Bus,CN.B471112,BN.5434,797 BAL,Nottingham CC,1959,Barton 797.Rebuild .TN,OTL,97,B-Motorcoaches-L,3-2023.Pinterest.4#
Now here is the full history of the above omnibus,797 BAL,to date :-
It started life as a brand new Leyland Tiger PS1/1/Willowbrook B35F Single Decker Bus,CN.471112,BN.6265,EJU 439,Leicester,12,1947,Allen’s Motor Services,37,Mountsorrel.
The Allen fleet was bought by Barton Transport in September 1955,and EJU 439,became part of the Barton fleet numbered 759,and was withdrawn in September 1958.
In 1958,the body was scrapped, and in 1959 the chassis was rebuilt, renumbered B471112 and rebodied with the Northern Counties Full Fronted Double Decker Bus Body,BN.5434.This
bus was then re-registered 797 BAL, numbered 797 and was withdrawn in December 1974.
Sold to Ellenton, Florida USA, 1975. For sale in Florida,USA, 2009, fitted with a Ford V8 engine - petrol or diesel? And it still survives.
NOTE:The cream double decker bus next to 797 BAL is an ex-Ribble 1939 Leyland Titan TD5/1949 Alexander Double Decker Bus. I think
Here endeth the lesson

More about Barton and these PD1s
An interesting company running some rare vehicles and some from manufacturers who were not mainstrean PSV chassis builders and some rare coachwork : Aston’s of Marton

It is a Duple body built to Barton’s specification.
Leyland 600
The location is Wallgate (A49) in Wigan town centre in the late 1960s or early 1970s.
The bus on the left is Ribble, fleet number 1725, a Leyland PD3. The Wigan Corporation
bus on route 19 is a Leyland PD2. Next to the Vauxhall Viva is a Commer bread van from
Rathbones bakery on Warrington Road. This area is now just 1 lane heading up through the
town centre, as seen in picture 2.
Ray,
The shop on the right in the black and white shot with Howards over the window is the place where I bought my first proper pushbike in about 1960 .
It was an Armstrong racer with 6 speed derailleur gears and it cost 28 quid , a tidy sum back then , and most of it came from the savings from my newspaper and milk delivery rounds .
No connection with wagons I know , just thought I’d chuck it into the mix seeing as how the opportunity presented itself .

By Heck Eddie, £28 quid back then in the early 1960s was an enormous amount of money. Cheers, Ray.
