Bulk bags, securing of?

I got fined £100 for not having my load strapped from france. I had travelled from the south of france…got stopped on the A23…Vosa said the only bags that did not need strapping, was the ones behind the pillars…my bags were loaded with china clay…3 quarters of a ton in each, and they never or would never move…but you know vosa…i dont know how a bag of sand can be classed as an insecure load, if it hasnt moved or fallen off…maybe one day, someone will challenge this in court…i will when my 6 numbers come up…lol

If ya flipped ya lorry they would move?? i guess if you crashed at 56mph they would also move.

of course flipping ones truck and trailer the load would move, and possibly crashing at 56 mph would also move them ( i doubt it ) but ive never had an accident in over 50 years, never lost a load, never had a claim made against me..so neither of those scenarios apply to me, as i am very experienced, with eyes up my arse and in the back of my head and left and right, i read the road as it should be read, anticipate every situation, and never ever take chances..but i wonder yet again, how vosa can interpret a dangerous load, just because it doesnt have a rope or a strap over it,yet hasnt moved a quarter of an inch in over 600 miles..the typical answer from them is: Because they can `

We do 1 tonne bulk bags of polished stone from Malaga to Calais, 28tonne with two bags double stacked across the centre axle on the trailer, we use tilts but even so theres never movement and we dont strap any of them, just no need. You would never get pulled for it over here, DVSA saying you have to strap them is just BS…

Andrew I totally agree with your position. But running like that over here without a load rated trailer would see you fined if pulled over sadly…

I know what youre saying F-reds  Just think its a case of DVSA being petty looking for revenue.
The stone we carry after riding down the road a few km’s actually settles further spreading out in the bags filling in the voids (im sure you know what i mean) jamming it all in even tighter and nothing short of upturning the trailer is going to move it…

I’m surprised the DVSA didn’t waive the fine for such a splendidly capable driver as you…

Bet he wear’s his seat belt, but he’s never moved…just like his load’s…

one of out lads got stopped with a full load of fertilzer on fully sheeted 5 straps in total2 crossed at back.now we have been doing it this like other drivers do for years and ever roped as well.vosa pull him at stafford and make him strap every row and bags before he could leave 18 straps in total and said that is what required.told the other drivers who same stuff they said they carry on as they always have.one firm even showed vosa years ago on tilt bed that the load would not move even when tilted when properly done with 5/6 straps.
thinks it must of been a new young vosa boy straight out of college.

Flat bed trailer I take it??

I’ve carried bulk bags for years on flat trailers and tilts and straps will do nothing to secure them. After five minutes of driving the bags will settle and all the straps will come loose the more you stop to tighten them the more the bags will settle and they will just come loose again. Anyone that thinks chucking a strap over a bag of sand or gravel will keep it secure in the event of an accident or a vehicle rollover is living in a dream land.

Which is why it’s best to use tippers or at least drop siders to ‘contain’ such types of loads not try to use straps or ropes to ‘secure’ them on a flat. :bulb:

2K km’s Malaga to Calais and done it dozens of times with 1 tonne bulk bags of stone, even double stacking them over the trailer bogie to get 28-30 bags on, they just dont move. Strapping them would be a waste of time anyway and wouldnt achieve anything…
