BRS DEPOTS

Any idea who built the cabs on those two Bristols?

Both were new in May 1955. REL 715 was all Bristol built. RGC 211 had a cab made by Holmes. The Dodge Kew was brand new and hadn’t had it’s headboard fitted.

Thanks, matey. I have to confess that I can’t recall seeing that shape of cab. The last ones I remember had a much flatter front panel.
Told you the grey cells had packed in!

And back to Penkridge for a dodgy Trev?

Great hgv training school , instructor Ken . I use to think there wagons were well looked after for a BRS depot .

hiya,
Jakey as a former “red and ruster” every BRS depot maintained their
vehicles to the highest standards, there was dents and scrapes by the
boatload but the running gear was tip-top have seen too many spit and
polished motors on the hard shoulder with the shed tipped over and a
fitter in attendance, or the driver up the bank awaiting the arrival of a
fitter, you very rarely saw a BRS motor broken down, it was the best
place I ever worked and when the last depot I worked at closed it’s doors
I was fortunate to get on with the local water company with the same
high standards of maintainence and rules and regs.

Maybe, I learned those sort of tricks off a Yorkshireman   , I had a free parking space on the Sunset every night in exchange for the use of my lawnmower by the Major who ran it.

hiya,
Trev you will no doubt have visited the old BRS depot on Team Valley,
there was always a canny canteen in there just through the main gate
and on your left I think it was privately run at the end but still it was
serving good grub, wonder if it is still there??, there are still a lot of
people employed in there.

Hi Harry ,

I was took on the youth training scheme (yts) in the middle 80s , at Oxford depot , did my apprenticeship , I enjoyed my time in the workshops very much , I knew all the drivers and they treated me well, many tales can be told about these drivers and there trucks , The bug got me and I went driving for them on two contracts , being a fitter saved them money and I enjoyed every minuite of my time on the road , I recall many times as a young boy going out after a shift in the workshops on the night trunk with I vor parry in his mint Roadtrain , he allways bought me some sandwichs and in return I had to clean the inside of his cab . If only I could do one more trip in the roadtrain to Fleetwood docks . I go round and see him every now and then and he tells me the same tales over and over again , i never say about it but just listen and well up . Any how Harry I run my own wagons now but I do miss Brs Oxford .

I will go and take a picture of whats left .

I think the picture speaks for itself.

I think I put these on somewhere before. Taken April 1963

Back in the 60’s we used to go to the Reading depot on Cardiff Road to remove and refit cylinder liner’s in the 5.1 and 5.7 BMC diesels that they ran back then. I have forgotten the manager’s name but Frank was his first name I believe?

Pete.

Might have been but I was but a lad back then so hadn’t grown a memory cell! Not sure if the depot is still active, we used to repair a lot of the contract fleet back then, British Moulded Fibre was one company with BMC FJ pantechnicons and a firm from Bracknell had some FJ artics on the hire fleet. There was a few LD vans run by local firms on contract hire as well, Bowyers Sausages had a few, must have been a good scheme in its day as they hired out dustcarts and road sweepers as well!

yes kingswinford kit they “Tim Price” dropped trailers in there for a few years so did i on times…

If i remember correctly the Bedford depot was in Ampthill Rd on the left as you headed out of town. Dont know whats there now but as a kid i used to bike there from home [ 7 miles ] to collect the fleet numbers. In 1970 i drove a Noddy van on parcels for a few months then long distance work beckoned. The parcels depot was on the left as you had passed Wilmers Corner but i cant remember the street name. Wasnt the National Freight Corporation which was the successor to BRS based in St Peters Sreet?
