Rob K:
I have to take back what I said about NTHell earlier in this thread. I’ve now been with them for about 2 months on their 10meg package (£33/month) and my connection icon currently shows me having been connected for 26 days and 9 hours constantly, and that was only when I last re-booted the PC too.
It’s never dropped a connection and the speeds I’ve been getting have been well above average. I have to be honest and say that I am VERY impressed with NTL contrary to what I’ve said in the past .
Rob i am on 1 meg with nthell and pay 17.99 a month
The thing is in August everyone on nthell will be upgraded to 10 meg for free
Ahhh, but you won’t be getting the same service as I am though! Those that get the free upgrade all get bunched on one server so in effect you still only get a 1 meg service because you’re sharing it with 5,000 others. Me, on the other hand, stays with all the other top paying punters and we still get the top band width as there’s only 500 of us sharing . There was a thread about this on the adslguide forums a while back.
Iget 2meg for 20€ a month here in Algeria plus you get 2 gallons of diesel for a 1£ not that bad but the food is ■■■■ . The work is OK another couple of years to go then if no new contracts back behind the wheel its allways the old egg in the basket that will bring a few quid in when the golden egg is not there you can,t beat it then you can,t beat a ■■■■

I bought a Belkin wireless modem router the other week
If you have any problems with it, give me a shout. I’ve kinda become an expert on problematic Belikn routers lately and it was from learning the hard way!!!
Whatever you do, don’t type ‘Belkin problems’ into Google - it’ll depress you too much.

I’m thinking of going onto Broadband but I cant make up my mind who with. Who’s the best one to go with?. I’m also thinking of wireless broadband does anyone have it any tips?.
If your in a telewest area you cannot go wrong with blueyonder.
Upto 10 Mb with free antivirus and spyware suite. Unlimeted downloads aswell
I went with Freeserve when they started up, back in the days of dial-up. I went to a 1 Meg broadband connection at £17.99 a month and have now upgraded to 2Mb. The upgrade cost a 1 off £20 and I still pay £17.99 a month.
Freeserve were bought by Wanadoo who have recently announced that they are actualy Orange and have rebranded to suit.
I’ve had a few minor problems with my connection in the early days but have had nothing to complain about since, even through all the name changes.
Everything has worked fine crossed fingers, toes, legs and everything else that I can, now that I’ve tempted fate with that remark.
In the end I went with NTL. The reason being due to being in a flat it was the only way I could do it. I joined them in March time I think & I’ve had quite a few problems & cant wait to cancel after a year unless they alter their ways.
Problem 1: Recieved a letter saying I owe them £14.99, didn’t pay because I thought I had setup a direct debit. I them got a letter saying if I dont win they would disconnct me. So I rang them & paid it with my card after they explained.
Problem 2: Got another letter saying I owe them £14.99. I rang them & said I have had this problem before, she said somebody had cancelled the DD I said it aint me. Again I paid it on my card. I did explain if I have anymore problems they can come & take it out.
Problem 3: Ready light wouldn’t stay on & got no signal. Rang tech support which was in INDIA!!!. After a few questions & about 20mins he told me I need a new computer . Ok I said & put the phone down. I waited about 2hrs & it started working again.
Problem 4: Same thing happened as in problem 3. So again I rang tech support & got a woman this time who after a few more questions she said there was a line fault & the engineer would call. The engineer came & said it was a fault in the way my connection was connected to the main box, so he said the line gang would need to come out.
Problem 5: Ready light goes out again. Rings tech support after a few question I will send engineer out. He arrives I explain to him what the engineer before him had said. He checked it all out & promptly fitted two inline attenuators to my cable. He said its all right now. I said before he left its slow compared to what it was, NO he said its right for 1mb. Then he leaves.
Problem 6: Yes you’ve guessed it READY light out agin. So, yes I ring tech support again. You have a connection problem I will send engineer out on Friday!!!. Hang I say its Saturday & I have to pay for something thats not working until Friday…with that he says sorry & hangs up. Well I thought {z/b} to that & takes attenuaters out & its perfect no problem at all. I removed the attenuaters after contacting there online help who more or less said that I had done wrong. So I leaves them out. This was on Thursday & the engineer came Fiday & siad that the engineer who fitted the attenuaters should never have fitted them because its not for broadband useage & he backed up the story of the first engineer who said about a line fault which had only just been put right.
Sorry its long BUT I’m so angry with NTL All this happened within the last 2-3 months.
Orange formerly wanadoo/freeserve are giving free broadband at home if you purchase or have an Orange moblie contract phone paying £30 per month or more. Seeing as we all have mobiles and prolly pay that, its a handy way to get it for free? I think you get the wirless box as well but check out the Orange homepage for more info.

Orange/Wanadoo/Freeserve is absolutely [ZB]. I put up with them for 3 weeks before ripping it out. The speeds are horrendously slow.
Cheers Mike-C. I’m waiting until next year then I will start looking at the moment I’m planning to go back to AOL because they now do broadband silver wireless so I will wait & see. I would have still been with aol but they didn’t support wireless silver then. Thanks again Mike & all.

I have heard people complain about their service, as i have heard them complain about every other service too. I couold only say the same as Simon, i’ve been with them for years and never had one problem at all, and i get 8MB connection now. That offer by the way will give you the fastest connection your line will allow.
Avoid “talk talk broadband” by the carphone warehouse.
My dad signed up for what looked like a good deal(cant remember what it was),
It worked fine at first, then after around a fortnight they told him it was being upgraded in his area.
At which point he lost his connection… He then proceeded to spend the next fortnight ringing “customer services” YEAH RIGHT!
£2 connection charge every time he rang… then on hold for up to an hour… then passed from pillar to post by inept pillocks who didnt know there head from there arse.
In the end i told him to cancel the direct debit and let them whistle for there money… Which he duly did last monday.
Ive since heard they (talk talk) were innundated with customers and couldnt cope with the huge increase. Be careful. (im on ntl bb and have nothing but praise for them)

It doesn’t work like that. Cable doesn’t have contention in the same way ADSL does. With ADSL, users share all the bandwidth that is piped into each exchange, so it’s entirely possible to get much less than the advertised speed.
With Cable the link to the exchange (and thus the local sharing of bandwidth) is skipped. Data goes direct to the internet backbone.
My cable speeds are not dependent on what my nieghbour does with his cable. The same cannot be said for two adjacent DSL users.
was with tiscali but since i moved 8 weeks ago they havent been able to provide me with broadband even though ive moved 6 houses up the road.
with many phone calls from me they were unable to tell me this at any point stating the ring back in 7 days sir you will be on line by then all the time taking money out of my account
