hiya,
sorry about the delay mac/d but i’m sure i’ve seen it here on where lads have said they have had an hgv since age 18 all i know is i drove military hgv’s but had to wait a year before i could get a start legally, one guy said he would risk it if i was willing to, i was tempted but my old man said if you get caught you’ll get jailed so i hung on till i was 21 so i just assumed they had brought the age down from 21 to 18 mind you i wouldn’t like to think i was letting a kid of that age loose on today’s roads and handling today’s weights because he can’t have gained much experience, bring back second men where experience can be gained the proper way on the road and on the job.

hiya,
have pulled trailers no rings no hooks a bar ran from front to back it was fixed just below the chock rail ( ok north westerners ) rave and joined to the trailer at intervals of about two feet i quite liked the idea and became quite a dab hand at roping them if my memory is still working killingbecks had a couple of four in liners using that idea way back n the sixties.
thanks harry long retired.
That’s common in Australia or New Zealand as their trailers don’t have “roping hooks” either !!
hiya,
thanks for that info B L my old memory is still functioning afer all.

HI Keith, silly boy sitting in the sand clearing customs, if I was you, I would have sat in the lorry, on CB I was Curlytop, in uk from 1978, when I went on Bulwarks for Carlsberg, until I packed up in 1999, or my wind up handle " Puff Pastry", I rise to anything, you seem a nice boy, I did have a thread on about “CB”, I knew a lot of people. Hi All
Started something didnt I , Ring Dolly , surely someones taking the pee pee . rope
s hanging down over the ring , left hand pull a loop through the ring and up , right hand pull a loop through yer left hand loop and make a normal dolly twist , I always do double twists so I dont end up on my ■■■■ , you then have three bits of rope going through the the loop , all you
ve got to work out is which one to pull to tighten the load so as you dont end up on your ■■■■ a second time , and with the one piece of hanging rope left hanging once tightened go to the next ring . there you go Norm give myself enough rope and it
s clear as mud . I was always told Id done to much roping but with the use of ring dollies and spreaders my load never moved , I once turned my Lorry over just north of Oxford with a rope and sheeted load of rubber for Fort Dunlop , we could
nt move it that day so we came back in the morning with a heavy crane and the load was still intact , even if it was nearly upside down by then .
Reards Frenchy .
hiya,
glad you sorted that one frenchy, now back to BRS business does anyone know what goes on at blackburn’s old depot in bennington st drove past a while back and apart from not being green anymore it looks much the same, have happy memories of the old place worked there twice first time made redundant in about 1965 and got started back later the same year when the work picked up got laid off again due to work drying up about three years later and could have gone back again but didn’t and the job wouldn’t have lasted much longer anyway, still they was very happy days.
thanks harry long retired,
Frenchy me old cocky, I told you if they gave you enough rope, you would hang yourself, not ring yourself to death Ha Ha Ha. Also I stated that I had seen many lorries turned over, but the loads had not moved, due to good sheeting & roping, and many of the ones that happened, was on the A1, they had loads of roundabouts, the police thought it was for going to fast, but they filmed some of them, and found it was the load, when it swade to one side, then you turned back off the roundabout, it flipped the lorry over at low speeds, that is why they slowly got rid of the treaded “O”, and made flyovers & slip roads, I hope you young drivers are looking and learning. hiya,
got a backload via hampstead depot it was twenty tons of cement two drops 5 tons penmaenmawr the rest angelsey got to the 5 ton drop it was coloured cement red and yellow for making patio flagstones the place was down a track and the paperwork said deliver by small vehicle only somebody cocked up no chance of getting near with the old bristol artic, had to uncouple on the main road put a pallet on the fifth wheel and deliver unit only took me three loads and got a dicky signature for three split bags and not a hint of a lift from the firm, hard shift that one, but what about the initiative good thinking or just plain crackers.
thanks harry long retired.
Bye bye, going tomorrow to Great Yarmouth for four nights, one at a Travel Lodge, 3 nights at the Carlton hotel, oppersite the Wellington pier, if you go down in your horse drawn caravan Harry, I will buy you a drink. Will see my younger brother, and try to thrash him at bowls, but I hate to see grown men cry. Ha Ha Ha Sandman Norman
Harry , very impressive mate but how did you get all that black fifth wheel grease off your clothes , and the load , the dicky signature was probably for the multicouloured red , yellow and black, init .
Norn , slow rollover was proved to be the pendulum affect , I`ve seen daylight many a time under my trailer wheels on roundabouts , they said straightlining them counteracted this problem . worked at MIRA ,ha . enoy your dirty weekend .
Regards Frenchy
hiya,
well norm the horse is a bit like me ready for the knackers yard so i don’t think me and the old grey mare would make it in the words of the song, the old grey mare (and the old grey harry) just aint what we used to be, that reminds me must get the old caravan out of storage and get her cleaned up ready for the season generally get a couple of weeks in the scottish borders and a couple of weeks in york each year and might get a couple of weeks in the canaries as well the travel insurance has been prohibitive since the surgery it’s come down now it’s been over two years since the c thingy and with it not rearing it’s ugly head since then i don’t need to declare it this time, it isn’t i couldn’t afford it i just thought it was robbery the last time i enquired it was going to be over £700 for me alone i just wouldn’t pay on principal, the canaries would be a package job and not pulling the caravan, i hasten to add.well norm have a great time on the break and don’t treat the younger brother too harshly at least let him nearly win, you and your young lady have a smashing time on your break and the offer of a baggage handler still holds just so long as the luggage isn’t too heavy all i need is a hernia well norm ta ta for now hear from you on your return.
thanks harry long retired.
hiya,
frenchy you must have been composing at the same time as me missed your bit about me getting up to eyeballs with grease well i didn’t actually i put cardboard on the turntable first then tied a pallet on using the (ring or rail dolly) method making a mini four wheeler i got a bit sweaty mind delivered the 5 tons in 2x2 ton loads and a 1 tonner i’m either a star or an idiot methinks today an idiot, could have taken it back to queensferry i would have been covered by the paperwork stating to be delivered by a four wheeled motor only but we was made of sturdy stuff in those far away days and you couldn’t do enough for a good boss, BRS.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry, I do not think you are a star, but definately the other one, always do the boss a favour, as long as he pays you well for it. Blood sweat and tears I have done for the BRS Overland cause, but only because they paid me well to do it, Ha Ha Ha. But if they scratched my back, I would do the same for them. Sandman Norman
