Hi Chris . There were very many of these mk5 Seddons on BRS early 50s . particularly at theOxford depot -well suited for Nuffied exports large cases. i would dearly love to find the artic/carrimore trailer version picture on these threads and i seem to remember that the BRS forward orders for them amounted to 2 years production.spec was Perkins P6 ,David Brown 5 speed ,eaton 2 sp axle, starting assisted by Ki-gas paraffin /petrol mix hand pumped in whilst manifold heater on in winter .proved a very reliable motor -a payload of 10/12 ton --trailers were Carrimore with king pin set well back allowing the front to be close to back of cab and a bed length of 25 ft ,We had a full set of trailers -flats, boxes, bolster. tilts. low loader etc .very versatile --oh and of course restricted to 20 mph , well thats what the plate said !!! . regards ivor

Hi Tidderson, thanks for that, I’m trying to work out what the load is? You got any idea Ivor, or do you recognise the driver? This fleet list/size was printed in 1952, as you say Ivor look at the amount of 4-wheelers at Oxford, 173 Regards Chris

Hi Tidderson, Well what a find .very many thanks for PFC 316 --mine was PFC 319 ! i see its loaded with John Allen motor scythes for the docks -a very regular load those days, i cannot place the driver yet -give me time ,another one behind it could well have been 319 -i wonder
JAKEY:
Tosh boy , do these drivers ring a bell , Ivor parry , Bernard woodward rip , Fred holiday , George payne , Albert hall , wrecker driver Tex , Fitters Alfie Atherton , Ex Kidlington Ted Starling , I could go on and on , all Brs Oxford .
Hi Jakey, The only name that stands out is Bernard Woodward ,i remember him, Fred Holiday and Ted Starling names do ring a bell ,we are talking early fifties and my nearest mates would have been Hoppy Haines,Cavener,Douglass, Barnes (trailerman) Thompson ,Weller, Den Blackwell ,Doug Charlett, Charlie Emsden ,The only workshop staff (mayfield rd) was Colin Gardiner.A very long time ago now --Toshboy

Here’s the whole picture. Sorry only 1 Seddon
Hi Tidderson , The complete picture showing the age range of the fleet at that time -we had just about every make going .all from bought out hauliers dumping their rubbish - i think nationalisation done them a favour! The Albion was the sister of ADR (Chris) s dads one whos fleet was 44g413
Unfortunately i cannot place the drivers much to my annoyance. The loads of scythes were the mainstay of production at Allens but they made road rollers and trenchers as well

Hi Tosh boy , Colin gardiner was the engineer before I got to the depot , but he use to pop in after he left , also I think he lived in Headington where I come from , also when Bernard Retired he had done 46 years service , Ivor parry had done 37 years service when he retired.
Hoppy haines was in the stores in the workshop wasn’t he ? and lived in Champion way Littlemore about 3 min walk away .

Hi Chris. i’m also surprised at the 4w count although it would include Kidlington and Banbury, also listing six 8 wheelers -Oxford was hardly heavy industry most work was capacity loads out of Cowley ,i do remember though that once we had two Leyland octopus come in and they re-appeared minus 2nd steers converted to hippos ■■ pity the Tidderson line up did hot include your dads Albion or my Seddon.

As Ivor says, this is my Dad’s Albion, pic took in 1952, that’s my eldest brother stood by the front wheel. Regards Chris
JAKEY:
In the early 80s there was only one Commer two stroke left parked by the far fence and a load of Buffalos and some rough trailers.
Chris do you remember the large wooden crates full of Austin Marinas piled high by the far fence , yes all went to scrap
Oh Steve, believe me mate, the stuff that went “missing” from Cowley Factory was staggering mate . It included Tractors/Trailers (some loaded with sssssshhhhh, don’t ask ). I remember 1 instance of Pete Crump coming in 1 morning to see his Buffalo being driven out the gate by someone unknown, he went in & asked where his wagon was going & who was driving it? He was told it had been sold, he asked why, to be told the clutch had gone, he said when did that happen then cos it was alright yesterday when I bought a full load of Steel back from Llanwern with it . He had to get in his car & chase it down the road to get his gear out of the cab . . Look the other way, cos you won’t stop it happening . Regards Chris
Hi , Brs Oxford , only had 2X GUYS one ex pergamen press blue with a Gardner 180 in , a white guy with a aec engine in ,we used this as a road going shunter and the rest of the fleet were 4x roadtrains on general haulage , and a a hand full of Marathons and the odd Buffalo.
The Crusaders were gone except one which was made in to a wrecker.
There were no Seddons at all by the early 80s .
I can still recall all the fleet numbers of the general fleet and drivers names .

I can remember a new blue big j going through the BRS paint shop at Wolverhampton for an Oxford contract I think the name on it was Oxford University Press, would that be the same one ?
At one time the main workshops at W-ton did all the new vehicle painting and some body building for Midlands BRS.
Hi Trev that was the one , it was very tidy when I saw it and it must of had a good tidy driver because un like other Brs wagons it was nice.
That’s a bit strange you painted it because Oxford depot had there own paint shop , last painter was John simmons but before I started they had a few painters plus the top warehouse was where they built Star bodies ,I think this was a trading name for Brs .
The old Guy was bought by John Allens Of Radley so was more than likely shipped abroad , it was a very dark Blue with a black chassis .
