Schneider kept them old ones to avoid all the emission related problems the others have, go to any Freightshaker dealership and it will be full of Werner, Crete etc, you don’t see pumpkin trucks in them!
Same reason I’m driving a 2004 Kenworth T600 at my current firm. I’d love a more modern truck to live in, but for mechanical reliability this one is second to none.
On mileage pay a new truck is a huge pay cut

It certainly is. I dont know if they’re particularly unreliable compared to anything else but I know a few guys who’ve either bought new Volvo’s or drive them as company drivers and the reliability is absolutely dire and back up service from most of the Volvo dealerships is horrendous. It pains me to think that what is such a good truck brand in Europe, is what it is in North America.
My company run old T600s, the oldest we have are 97s and the newest are 07s, just old enough to be pre-emission. Because our man can no longer find 2007 trucks that are in good enough condition and have been well maintained he’s had to admit defeat and is on about purchasing a 2011 T660 from Montreal thats on adblue.
Pre 03 is pre emission, 03-07 have EGR (or ACERT on CAT engines) 07 and newer have the DPF and 10 and newer have EGR, DPF and SCR
From what I know the Volvo and the Daf (Paccar) are the only engines worth considering, so I can only put your friend’s bad experience with the Volvo down to North American stupidity/driving style

Not really, not when most of them are English, Irish and Dutch and have driven several other kinds of trucks previously without anywhere near as many issues as the new Volvo’s have had. Other friends have had Prostars from new with no trouble at all, many people I know run new Cascadia’s without the slightest issue, same with Peterbilts but everyone I know who’s got a Volvo less than a few years old has never ending problems and those problems are nearly always related to the anti-emission components, but why are Volvo’s so unreliable in this respect when every truck now has to have the same type of nonsense.
That’s the total opposite of what I know! My firm backed 5 DD15 engined Freightshakers and 5 ■■■■■■■ engined Petes as they couldn’t keep em on the road, non stop emmision related problems.
Whereas everyone I know with a Volvo engined Volvo has had no issues with any of that crap, apart from the injector cups the Volvo appears to be problem free
