Runcorn/Widnes ?

Correct Dave,
I must admit that I always thought that the railway bridge was very impressive.

I recognise the road and rail bridges, but I have not seen that transporter bridge before. I heard they were building a new one.

PS is it possible to walk or cycle on the path alongside the train tracks? Edit- no, according to Wikipedia- the footpath was closed in 1965.

The Cleveland “White Horse” Nr Easingwold, Its quite visable when heading south on the A 1 M, Regards Larry.

happysack:
Surely its the Kincardine bridge

Hi “happysack” Your correct it is Kincardine Bridge, Regards Larry.

Anyone want to guess on this one

Hi “Spud1960” IIRC Its the North Bridge in Hull, Regards Larry.

There used to be a charge of one penny, pre decimalisation of course, to walk across the railway bridge at Runcorn and as far as I’m aware, this price never changed. The cost of using the transporter bridge was exorbitant by contrast. A figure of thruppence ha’penny, or fourpence springs to mind, although I’m not exactly certain. All I know is it did seem a lot of money at the time, but in fairness, this did include a push bike and was quite possibly a return ticket, I’m not sure. It was quite a while back. 56 years or more in fact.

There has never been a toll charge on the Runcorn Widnes bridge ever since it opened in 1961, but this is all set to change when the Mersey Gateway opens in the autumn of 2017. A toll will then be imposed on both crossings. That is unless you happen to be a resident of Halton borough of course, as for whom, it will continue to be free.

Yep, the elephant is still there on the A30 in Camberley. The works behind it has gone and, the A30 is much changed there, as seen in the pic. It was just a normal 2 lane road, now all sorts of complicated junctions around there.

Apparently, it was built for the Lord Mayors Show in London in 1963. After that, it was put on a plinth, where it still is and, became a landmark for hauliers and holidaymakers, in the days before the M3 took over.

Can anyone remember King Billy on his horse statue in The Market Place Hull, A lovely piece of sculpture IMO, Regards Larry.

Hi Larry

Spot on taken from Drypool Bridge

By the way King Billy is still there, there is a bit of folklore that after the sculptor finished the sculpture he realised that the had forgotten the stirrups and committed suicide

Mushrooman. Here is the road you liked out of Bristol. The Headlight cafe used to be behind the camera in the sixties.

Thanks Phil, I have been trying to think of the name of that café for years.

Now lads, if I sent you over to Manchester for a load of Sky Hooks which area would you go to. :unamused:

Immediately on the left-hand side of that photo of the Portway was the lading stage from where White Funnel line ran cruises to resorts along the North Somerset coast and across the Bristol Channel to Barry Island. I remember they were still running in the 1950s but had finished by the time I started lorry driving in the mid-sixties.
