BREWERY LORRIES

Hi Nigelhunt
There are one or two photos on other threads of Wilson/Watneys brewery wagons from Manchester.Did you ever go into Boddingtons brewery at Strangeways M/chester? it’s now a car park for the MEN arena, all thats left is the chimney, sad but that the way things are going these days.

This is the only photo i have taken in 1985.Brewliners was previously, watneys, then courage took over in around 1992?The tractor unit in this photo ended its days as a shunter for courages in their brooklands depot. It was a real shame as it got knocked about an smashed up while in the yard at brooklands.

Could do with some pics of S&N Breweries around the Seventies for a model I’m planning, coloured if poss, something like these. Franky.

Here are a couple of pics I posted on the Southampton thread sometime ago of Strongs of Romsey Hants.

Regards Pat

Great line up of Albions & Leylands there AINACS I am guessing that the pic would have been taken late 50s early 60s.Looks quite a tidy fleet.Brilliant photos.I notice they all have radiator covers for the winter months, heaters if fitted wer’nt very good them days.

Great pictures lads.I remember the brewliner volvos being based at NEWARK in courage livery. At that time it was one of the best driving
jobs you could get.Tried once but you had to wait for someone to die ,and with all jobs its not what you know its who you know.
Newark was a very well known for its breweries in the 1960s.JAMES HOLES brewery one end of the town, and WARICKS and RITCHARDSONS
the other. Now converted into living accomidation, but still standing.

Russells Brewery, Malton, North Yorkshire. My granddad worked there. The year is 1952, the flags are out for the coronation. The top photo is Morrisons car park now :imp:

Hi boysee
A mate of mine used to work for Wilsons/Watneys at Manchester during the early 70s then transferred to Brewliners until he was made redundant. Will ask him if he has any Photos.

Your right about it being one of the best jobs,I was on watneys which became brewliners.I worked out of mortlake brewery doing night trunk up to halifax, huddersfield, and tadcaster. My p60 when i was made redundent in 1993 was 36k.If you went sick you got as much mony as if you were working. In the end the drivers were earning more than managment so courage took over the trunking then scottish an newcastle. When brewliners started they had approx 72 volvo,s and 300 trailers.Half the units were based at transport avenue brentford and half at huddersfield in hoyers yard in leeds road. There were day and night drivers, all the nights were drop and pick up,sunday night start through to thursday then friday over time if you wanted it.In the 11years i worked there i think only 1 person left and that was a drink driver.

I remember when i was twelve years of age going with dad late in the afternoon to a brewery in castle eden,to deliver some malt.
We went in a six wheel TK Bedford, and when we were unloaded dad said we would have to sleep at the brewery as his time was up.
One of the brewery workers told dad we would be all right to sleep in there canteen, and said we would find plenty of biscuits in there.
We went into the canteen and i started to look for the biscuit tin,dad said that in the north east biscuits were what we call cushions.
Needless to say we were very comfortable, but i was most disapointed as there was no food.

This looks like it could be the same motor, seen in Thorpe’s yard at Thurgoland in the mid-80s:

Heres a few recent ones 1st pic is not Fosters but Newcastle Brown on the way to Kendal to get bottled in half pint bottles for USA

Seems like your spot on 240 Gardner, here’s another pic at almost the same view, you can also see the S&N colour showing on the roof of the Thorpe livery. What a shame to see it like that I hope it was saved for restoring. The original pics are not mine but from the Editor of Truck Model World magazine who kindly sent them to me for a model project so I’m not sure if he knew anymore about the vehicle, I’ll ask him. Around 1981 after I had done Nine years in the forces I returned to HGV fitting and one of the first jobs I got was to go for parts at the local truck scrap yard. I came across two Seddon 32:4:220 cabs one of which my Dad drove before I had joined the army. It was sad to see them lying amongst the other scrap cabs just like the Aki above, I just had time to remove the Seddon badge from the rad cover and still have it today. Franky.

To be honest, I’ve no idea what has happened to it since - I suspect it’s either still there or it’s been weighed in! I took that photo in the mid 80s. Or, to put it another way… 25 years ago… :open_mouth:

The cab next to it on the right, by the way, was unused factory stock, still in the works yellow primer!!

Hello everyone and how are you?? At long last I’ve scanned in three pics of a Simonds ERF. This Lorry is a Tug and used to pull a drawbar trailer and it dates from the 1930’s era (I’m not sure exactly when). It was restored by Courages and sat in The Berkshire Brewery, Reading. I took these shots in 1993 and as now the brewery has shut I wonder what happened to it? Does anyone know?

Our local breweries in Nottingham were Shipstones (don’t take p*ss out of Shippo’s… or there’s nowt left to drink!!), Home Brewery, Kimberley (Hardy & Hanson’s) and Mansfield. Without exception, all the fleets were well-specc’d and well presented and well maintained. Anyone got any photo’s?

found this on the net.

Lovely photos Terry. The registration dates from november 1948 (Reading), although the cab does seem older. The interesting thing is that I’ve just bought a Dyson Trailers catalogue from 1950 which has a 3/4 rear view of this (or an identical) wagon pulling a new Dyson-built six-wheel tanker trailer. The wagon is carrying eight large and eight small barrels in its body, although whether these are full of beer or something heavier as ballast is not explained. It’s a shame that the registration number is not visible in the catalogue picture. The trailer is a low-slung affair with ackerman steering and a tandem rear bogie, all on large single tyres. These trailers could be transported on railway flat wagons for longer journeys, and had two huge anchor rings on either side of the tank for lashing down. What colour was Simonds’ livery?
Fodenway.

The first shot of the ERF dray brought back memories when as a lad I lived on Shap road in Kendal and the S & N garage was just round the corner and they ran some little ERF 4LK drays( smaller than the one in your shot) they were like little “sowing machines” ran sweet as a nut!!
