Good pic, thank you!

BFI did indeed go bust, but the Bowden family still own Seabourne (container depot) and BTS (contract vehicle hire), not to mention TML (remember them?), plus interests in insurance and finance.

Yes they did george

What does TML mean, is there a website for BTS.

What does TML mean, is there a website for BTS.

TML stands for Transport Management Limited, and it was formed in the late 70s as a consortium of P&O Roadways, Ruswell Davies & BFI (plus perhaps one other at the outset) to carry out all the work for Mitsui OSK Lines.

By the turn of the century, it was owned by Securicor (45%), Roadways (45%) and the Bowden family (10%). When MOL set up their own operation, TML almost came to the end of the road, and the major shareholders disposed of it to Bowden in 2002.

There’s no website for BTS - it’s not a big outfit. They concentrate on supplying motors on contract hire, and don’t have a traffic office at all.

Thanks 240

I work for Tml in their traffic office based inside Seaborne containers yard at Thurrock. It stands for Transport Management ltd and is partly owned by Denis Bowden. We run BTS trucks on contract from Wellingborough and Southampton. Most of the BTS fleet is contracted to MOL Mitsui shipping.Tml is a far smaller operaration than it used to be in the 80’s and 90’s when it was running 80-90 trucks a day fomally as FCL.

I remember BFI in the eighties, never realised that they had set up again as BTS.

Thanks Rob - I’d forgotten about the old FCL name.

Denis Bowden is also a shareholder in Truckinsure, a large company based at Croydon.

'Ello everybody. First post.
I was a Brain Haulage driver based at West Thurrock. 1985 - 'til it finished in '92. Started off on spot hire, then went yard shunting, then Maersk line with Dave Prosser, Peter Mason, and Peter Dann. Blimey, Maersk liked their pound of flesh them days, but the money was good. Peter Partridge and Barry ‘boots and saddles’ Sadler were there too. Sorry to anyone I’ve missed out.
Then went on nights and was on nights until it finished. I still work with Don Chandler and Colin Green. Terry Hunt has made a recent appearance too, he’s on the agency, four nights a week.
I now work for a large retail company on supermarket deliveries, based in West Thurrock. Just lately I’ve been doing three nights on the road and two shunting. No more nights out, woo - hoo.
I’ve still got my old BH and Maersk Line dust jackets in my wardrobe. I’m gonna dig 'em out, take a pic and post 'em on here.
Best driving job I ever had, without a doubt. Great nights out, great mates and great pay. Trouble is, the mates are thinning out a bit now.
My arms still ache from the amount of gold I had to wear for the interview.
Great site this, I’m glad I was pointed in its direction. So many memories.

Hi Tetleysmooth,
I saw Colin only a couple of months ago at Lou Sharman’s retirement doo however, I have not seen Don & Terry for some time.
Dad (Ron Holmes) was only saying the other day that he has not seen Terry for sometime, hope you are all well.

Bless the Royals and the gold [ 9 ct ]
