gloves - love seeing the old pictures of Bradford trucks and the streets too. I grew up around that area as my Dad drove for Remploy off Paley Road. Do you remember Wilsons Transport at the bottom of Wakefield Road? Also there was a small car garage next door that a friend of ours had. He had an old Jag been restored in there, Leonard he was called.

any more ? keep em coming…

Believe it was Essex Street, near St James’s Wholesale Market, also think Hornsbys had a yard there, or the driver was in the ‘Greasy Spoon’ on the roundabout at the bottom of Wakefield Road, others may know different■■?

Maybe stretching the Bradford Hauliers theme a little, but Les did have the yard near the Chainbar, where I think we may have met, when in my TD5. Alvin was also there at the same time, spannering for the fleet. Will have to see if anyone is going to complain. Do not know how to start up a new category for the Trucknet uk site, possibly Ramone is reading this and can assist me as usual. Does have its benefits being a ‘Luddite’ as it stops me from getting ahead of myself with all this computer/new technology rubbish. Only recently started using Biros instead of blunt pencils (in case I was to harm myself with sharp instruments).

Tried to get back to the new yard at the bottom of Whitehall Road, but entrance like Fort Knox with the barriers and not all security men are willing to let me on site, especially if no one there from Nobles!!!

Barry/Gloves

Haha, yeah you’re right Barry, might be stretching it a bit, but we did have the yard at Chain Bar, which was definitely Bradford, so I don’t think the forum police will arrest us!!

I first met you at the old yard we had at Birstall (next door to Albert Hicks), when I was a wee snip of a lad who used to freeze his nuts off every Saturday steam cleaning the fleet!

Alvin (my cousin) left us about 10 yrs ago to set up on his own. He had a Garage at Woodkirk’s (yellow tippers and tankers) near Garforth, then moved to a place at Sherburn. He bought a fleet of new Foden’s (around 10 I think!) and worked for over 2 years on the “new” A1 around Sherburn etc.

He now just runs and drives one Foden (a very tidy ex John Owen) which has a metallic blue painted cab and grey insulated bulk body. You may have seen it knocking about round Leeds.

As for my old man (Les). He has now moved out of the Whitehall Road yard, and is based on Gelderd Road at the old WInerite depot, at the roundabout where Whitehall Rd meets Gelderd Road. He’s running just one motor at the minute (a very tidy ERF / MAN ECS) and driving himself. But I’m sure you would be welcome any time to call in and have a cuppa and chat and take a few pics and reminisce about the good old days! Times have been hard these last 3 or 4 years! There are a few other tipper guys in the yard too who used to drive for my dad, but who have now set up on their own. So feel free to bob in any time. :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, I would love to see some of the old pics if you have any to post. I would actually be really interested to buy some copies of the pics, if you could arrange that? Feel free to send me a message at any time, if that’s something that could be organised? It’s my dad’s 60th this year and I was going to put together an album containing alot of the pics I have, but I’d love to see some of your pics in there too! Anyway, in the mean time, if you could post a few up, I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

Mark

It was the Winerite site that I meant, but got my Whitehall/Gelderd Roads mixed up, and there was this imposing barrier still to contend with. I will post some photos in the near future. I did call on Alvin when he was in the Garforth yard and took a few photos, but because I am never able to get out every weekend for one reason or another, tend to lose track of people and trucks. The usual response when visiting a yard is often that ‘You should have been here yesterday’. The things that I have just missed is unbelievable.

Barry/Gloves

PS Say hello to Les for me, he was always keen to see photographs of his own trucks and amazed that anyone should show an interest. Just as well, because there would be few records to look back on!!!

I look forward to a few pics being posted!

Bradfordlad - I don’t suppose your dad is Pat McCann is it? He drove for my dad a couple of years ago. Nice fella. Always looked mint those Foden’s. Credit to him.

Yeah, I remember Mark Pugh - Had a yard in Rodley and ran mostly MAN’s. He was gonna take over the world and was doing jobs very cheap I seem to recall! I went to school with his son, Ashley and was good mates with him. Haven’t seen him for years though.

having browsed this website for numerous months the nostalgia is really kicking in, seeing the photo of the old aec wrecker is bringing so many memories back. so here goes! I remember the green wrecker arriving at Copeland and clegg motor engineers just off bowling back lane, opposite bus garage. it was a tipper in frank obank & sons colours, I was 7 or 8 at the time and followed the conversion to wrecker with great excitement. it spent numerous years at those premises and then we moved from the area and lost touch. my dad drove for dennisons on tong street hauling coal to various mills and power stations, and come school holidays I was allways in the passenger seat clocking the miles up until it was time for me to earn a living! I served my time as motor mechanic at dennisons and was the best training I could have had. no recovery truck you went out and fixed the trucks on the side of the road!! I wonder if there are any old dennisons lads still about?

AEC, betterphoto for Sturdyman and also of M & R Foden

Gillson Foden parked at Hicks Old Yard, may have been sold on to Hicks

Could never remember which Hicks was which, as there was the other part of the family under the railway bridge, opposite Ring Lamp factory.

Sorry that the Bradford theme has stretched a little, bit until someone can set up a site to cover West Yorkshire, a lot of my photos could be classed as Foreign.

I was born and brought up for the first 11 years opposite Courtaulds Mill in Great Horton. Hindsight, what a wonderful thing, IF ONLY I had a camera to record all the Henry Long 8 wheelers and trailers, T E Shorts from Halifax and all the other wagons working out of there. I then moved to Allerton, again without a camera, when James C Ashworth was still using the old AEC Mk3 with the double bumpers and yes I did see them assisting each other up from Chapel Lane, probably over loaded for the engines of the day, IF ONLY!!!

June 1991

I think the late Les Simpson drove that 1 ,he was still working for Mick Galloway right up to his death ,Mick now owns T.Holmes at Keighley

Have difficulty in trying to remember what I have photographed over the years and which album they are likely to be in, but 2 more from Holmes and a poor shot of Baker Foden, sun in wrong place as usual.

2 ERFs from 1984 and yes I know it is not officially in the theme, but it does say Bradford Road on the doors!!!

Barry/Gloves

Brilliant Barry!

VUG 80X! What a great lorry that was! Had a 290 Rolls and used to pull like a train!

The red Foden was Cecil Noble’s (Alvin’s dad). He ran a 3 ERF’s and that Foden for a while.

He saw sense though and only ran them for 3 or 4 years before leaving the tipper game.

Great memories Barry! Keep them coming!
