Ray Smyth:
Hello to all you removal chaps. I think that I posted this picture on here a while back.
Do any of you remember Percy Powell Transport from Horndean, near Portsmouth ?
I would like to find other pictures of this Bedford TK. Percy Powell Transport became
part of Robert Baillie Transport in 1970, so the appearance of JRV 300F would have
changed soon after takeover. Kind Regards, Ray Smyth.
Hi Ray,
Yes it was the Park Road Depository of S & R Smyth i visited on many occations dropping items off there mainly.
I also remember braking down in Knowsley around 1979 and being towed to the main Bedford dealer in that area.
Always sticks in my mind when we arrived at the Bedford dealer there was a brand new Bedford TK 1000 on the forcourt. …with a brand new Marsden body …wish I had a camera back then.
Can’t say I’ve hard of this company before Ray or seen this TK before…nice looking compacked van though…looks a bit like the style Pickfords ran back in the day…but on a shorter wheel base.

Hi Mark, I would imagine the Bedford Agents were Garlic, Burrell & Edwards (Might not have got the spelling right) who were part of the Baird Group who also owned Marsden’s at that time.
Old Mr Marsden had died and passed the ownership of the business to his wife, and in those days transfer between spouses was not tax free and so death duty had to be paid. Within a couple of years or so Mrs Marsden then passed away and the two brothers Ken & Geoff had death duties to pay again and had to sell the business to fund this. GBE had several Bedford agencies in the St.Helens, Liverpool, Bootle area.
Merry Christmas and Happy new year to John and Mark,
Although all of the lads did there last day yesterday ,I have one lad doing a job today from London in a small luton ,260 cuft with packing but three men I think it needed to be here before the new year .
My lads are not due back until the 2nd too but I will be a porter for Robinsons on the 27th ,local move I here ,other than that I will wash and clean what I can when I get fed up indoors .
Two jobs were on Friday both going to new builds but we were all in by 3 pm and I was back by 6.30 pm ,went to bet at 9pm though .

Have a good holiday, Carl
Someone on the forum may reconise her though.
Regards Mark
Hi Carl,
Yes i recall you telling this story a few pages back,
So that would explain why that brand new TK with Marsden body would have been doing there.

How did your Christmas go mate ?
Yes went well mate I don’t want to go back either like the lay ins as well ,it’s going be busy when we go back still loads of outstanding delivery glad mam is ok
I did a bit of portering on Thursday for Robinsons (was knackered that night) although I was the porter I had to pack up the living ,dining room and load as the driver did not want too (although it was not his truck we were loading) ,any how he has got 1800ft on the lorry and two drops on his trailer (separate jobs) for Swiss delivery on the 4th (assistance from a swiss firm on all three deliveries) then a back load for London ,great job for the driver ,he is a good lad but the wagon is a worn out scruffy 07 plate.
Not much booked in for January so far but Robinsons are pretty busy so on the quite days we will be helping them out .
I often wonder how many of the removal companies I remember in the Reading area from the 60’s and 70’s are still trading, none of them at a guess!
Pete.
Thank you for your message above ,what are the names of the firms ? as we are not too far away I might know them ? ,Wilkins from Henley are now based in the old BRS Reading at Cardiff road ,bloody big warehouse .

Hi Steve,
Is that corporate work you assisted Robinson’s to load for Swiss ?
07 plate running that distance must have plenty of conferdence in that truck !
Mark ,I do not think it is Corporate work , lovely job wish it was me taking it .
Yes the wagon was the one I had in November for a trip to Manchester , great engine but its rotten as hell and in bad nick , it goes well but that’s about it ,Driver tries his hardest to keep it together but fails miserably .
To be fair it was knackered when he got it .
You have to tie up the doors from the inside as they open on there own , when I loaded it the other day ,I ■■■■■■■ every tear as it was on a long distance job any how .
John , I am the only one working here .
I got my nephew who drives his small sprinter on sick at the moment as he has just had a Kidney removed due to cancer !!! he is only 30 ! , we not used his motor for a few weeks so I am going to wash it today .
Hi Steve, sorry about your nephew and a young age as well all my thoughts with you mate not a nice thing ,why don’t they get rid of it if its knackered or do they keep them till they fall apart,
